We have a pair of Sunday Night Football contests this week and one of them features the Green Bay Packers visiting the Denver Broncos. Both teams will be looking to improve to 2-0 in the preseason with one more game to go before the real football begins. Green Bay went into the Dawg Pound and beat up the Cleveland Browns 23-10, while the Broncos won a 34-30 shootout against the Indianapolis Colts. Oddsmakers really like Denver in this one and have made them 7-point favorites with a total pegged at 39.
Dating back to August 2023, the Packers have won three of their last four preseason games, going 3-1 ATS as well, including last week’s win at Cleveland. The Broncos were favored in all three of their preseason tilts last year and went 1-2 straight-up and ATS. Denver covered last week’s game at Indianapolis as a 1.5-point underdog, winning outright. These teams have met four times in the preseason since 2000 and the home team has won three times with the total an even 2-2.
GREEN BAY PACKERS
Head coach Matt Lafleur sent out several starters last week for a few possessions and it paid off. Quarterback Jordan Love connected with Dontayvion Wicks for a 65-yard touchdown to get the scoring started and the Packers never looked back. Green Bay was up 17-3 at halftime and the defense did the rest in the 23-10 win at Cleveland. Sean Clifford saw most of the snaps and went 10-for-19 for 111 yards and a QB rating of 70.3. Running back Emanuel Wilson carried the ball 13 times for 67 yards and a score. On defense, Lukas Van Ness, Spencer Waege, and Colby Wooden each recorded a sack.
DENVER BRONCOS
Denver brought out the offense last week and recorded 34 points in their win over the Colts. However, the defense didn’t show up and allowed Indy to walk up and down the field. Quarterback Bo Nix made his debut and finished 15-for-21 for 125 yards and a TD toss to Marvin Mims Jr. in the second quarter. Former Jet Zach Wilson was solid as well (10-for-13, 117 yards). Running backs Audric Estime, Jaleel McLaughlin, and Blake Watson each carried the ball at least seven times. Estime earned the best average of 4.3 yards a carry.
Denver’s offense looked good last week, but I don’t see Nix and Wilson have solid performances in back-to-back weeks. Green Bay’s defense was solid and should be able to keep the Denver offense at bay. I’ll take the points.
