Two teams going in opposite directions will battle on NBC’s Sunday Night Football, as the Buffalo Bills host the struggling Green Bay Packers. Buffalo is coming off a bye week after a 24-20 victory at the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6. At 5-1, the Bills own the best record in the AFC behind a defense that is limiting opponents to 13.5 points per game and just 281.5 yards per game. Veterans Von Miller (six sacks) and safety Jordan Poyer (four interceptions, tied for the NFL lead) are the catalysts. The Bills have just a half-game cushion over the surprising Jets in the AFC East at will be at New York next week. Buffalo is now a huge 11.5-point favorite on Sunday with a total of 47.
Rodgers has badly missed All-Pro receiver Davante Adams and hasn’t come close to a 300-yard passing game this season. To make matters worse, Rodgers lost his new No. 1 wideout Allen Lazard to a shoulder injury. Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon are terrific running backs, but they were held to a combined 38 yards on 12 carries against one of the league’s worst run defenses in Washington. Sunday will be the first time Rodgers has ever been a double-digit underdog and has never won a game straight up as at least a 7-point dog. The Packers defense has been solid, leading the NFL in passing yards per game allowed at 168.9. They will need the defense to show up and slow down Allen and company.
Allen is on track to win his first NFL MVP Award. He has thrown for 1,980 yards and 17 TDs with only four picks while rushing for 257 yards and two scores. The Bills were mentioned as a possible destination for Christian McCaffrey before he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers last week. The Rams’ Cam Akers has been rumored to be a Bill ahead of the Nov. 1 Trade Deadline. Buffalo ranks first in total offense (440.8) and second in scoring offense (29.3). Allen had a rough game against the Packers as a rookie in 2018 when he was intercepted twice and sacked seven times during a 22-0 loss. The team could activate Pro Bowl cornerback Tre’Davious White this week. He hasn’t played this season after tearing his ACL last year.
All signs point toward a Buffalo route, but this is the NFL. We’ve seen so many upsets this year, including teams that were favored by double-digits. Whenever you have Rodgers on the other side of the ball, there’s always a good chance he can at least keep it close. I’ll take the points.
