A huge battle in the Big Ten takes place on Wednesday night, when when the third-ranked Purdue Boilermakers host the 16th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in West Lafayette, Ind. The Boilermakers extended their winning streak to 19 with a hard-fought 78-76 victory against Rutgers on Saturday and can open up a two-game lead over the Buckeyes at the top of the conference standings by earning their third straight win in the series. Purdue, who is looking for back-to-back Big Ten regular season titles, have won 21 in a row at Mackey Arena, including 14 straight this season. A win would also keep them on track to become the first team since the Indiana Hoosiers in 1975-76 to finish Big Ten play with a perfect record. Ohio State comes in having erased a 15-point deficit en route to a 75-67 win against Illinois on Sunday to keep pace with the Boilermakers. The Buckeyes have won back-to-back games since their stunning 82-79 home loss to Penn State on January 25th, and hope to improve to 5-0 on the road this season by beating Purdue in West Lafayette for the first time since New Year’s Eve 2013. Ohio State has won seven of the last 10 meetings, but Purdue has won nine games by 25 or more points at home this season.

Keita Bates-Diop was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the fourth time this season after averaging 24 points and 13 rebounds in the wins over Indiana (71-56) and Illinois. The senior scored a career-high 35 points and pulled down a season-best 13 rebounds against the Fighting Illini to record his 10th double-double of the season and the 16th of his career. Jae’Sean Tate contributed 11 points to move into 24th place on Ohio State’s all-time scoring list while Kaleb Wesson chipped in 10 points and 10 rebounds to record the first double-double of his career.

Purdue need every bit of Vincent Edwards’ 18 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists to help the Boilermakers avoid disaster in beating Rutgers for the eighth straight time. Dakota Mathias drained four 3-pointers en route to 16 points against the Scarlet Knights and became the 52nd player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. Carsen Edwards continued his strong play by adding 13 points to finish in double figures for the 14th time in 15 games. 5’10” guard P.J. Thompson scored 12 points and finished without a turnover for the fifth game in a row. Purdue has scored at least 70 points in 17 straight games.
I’m not worried about Purdue’s play against Rutgers, because they were clearly looking ahead and taking them lightly. I’m not sold on this Ohio State team right. I believe they’re a bit overrated. The Boilermakers are a legitimate Final Four team and will be focused for tonight’s contest.
