The Penn State Nittany Lions can go for the season sweep of the ninth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes and put themselves back in the bubble discussion for the NCAA Tournament. Penn State turned a close game at Illinois on Sunday into a blowout, outscoring the Illini 37-16 in the second half en route to their third-straight win a fifth in six games. The only loss during that stretch came at Michigan State after the Lions held a 30-24 halftime lead only to allow the Spartans to score 52 second half points. Penn State’s resume doesn’t include many quality wins, but they have a chance to turn the committee’s heads by playing the top five teams in the Big Ten standings to end the regular season – Penn State sits sixth. Despite the loss to the Nittany Lions, Ohio State still has a slim half-game lead over Purdue for the top spot in the conference and have responded to that setback on January 25th with four-straight victories. The Buckeyes have won five of the last six meetings with the Nittany Lions and the last two in State College.

Forward Kaleb Watson led five players in double-figures with 18 points in a 82-64 rout of Iowa on Saturday after missing all four of his shots in the previous game against Purdue and ending scoreless. Leading scorer and rebounder Keita Bates-Diop (19.9 points, 9.0 rebounds) has scored below his average in three of the last four games, but the outlier in that mix was a 35-point performance against Illinois in which he hit 13-of-15 free throws.

Penn State spread the scoring around in the win over Illinois on Sunday with all five starters scoring between 10-16 points led by Shep Garner’s 16 – his fist double-digit scoring effort since scoring 14 in the upset win at Ohio State on January 25th. Of Garner’s 223 field goal attempts this season, 191 have been from three-point range (40.3%) and he nailed 4-of-5 in the Ohio State meeting. The Nittany Lions are 6-1 in their last seven home games with the only loss coming in overtime to Minnesota – a loss that doesn’t help their case for an NCAA Tournament berth.
Both teams are playing really well right now, but Penn State is a very confident group right now and knows it can beat the Buckeyes again. I was hoping the Lions were going to be getting some points at home, but I’ll take them anyway.
