The Denver Nuggets bring the West’s second-best record into a place that has not been kind to them over the last few seasons and will try and buck that trend against the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night – airing nationally on ESPN. Since the beginning of the 2016 season, the Nuggets have gone to Salt Lake City seven times, only to come away with a loss in each contest. Most of those have been ugly also. Utah has won those seven games by an average of 14 points and have held Denver under 90 points in five of those seven. The Nuggets do ride a little momentum, winning their last two games by an average of 26 points, but they were against the lowly Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls at home. Denver is taking care of the teams they should beat, but are just 1-4 ATS in their last five road games versus teams with winning records. Utah had a six-game winning streak snapped by the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday, losing at home 109-104 despite Donovan Mitchell going off for 36 points. Mitchell has scored more than 20 points in each of the past nine games and is averaging 29.8 points during the stretch.
Denver point guard Jamal Murray has been on a nice run, hitting over 50 percent of his shots in each of the last four games and scored 26 points in the win over Cleveland. Murray is averaging 24 points during the four-game stretch and is on a sizzling 15-of-25 run from 3-point range. Center Nikola Jokic recorded his third triple-double in past seven games with 19 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds against the Cavaliers. He also had a season-high 16 assists in a win over Utah earlier this season.
Utah couldn’t take advantage of Portland the other night despite getting point guard Ricky Rubio (hamstring) back on the court after a six-game absence. Rubio was on a minutes restriction, but still managed to score 12 points in 14 minutes against the Trail Blazers. The Jazz’s undoing in their previous meeting with Denver was a poor fourth quarter. They were outscored 35-15 in the final frame of a 103-88 road loss back on November 3rd.
There are way too many trends going in Utah’s favor in this one. I know Denver has the better record, but the road has not been kind to them, especially in Salt Lake City.
