NFC East Preview, Betting Odds and Predictions [2024]

The Dallas Cowboys won the NFC East title in 2023 by default after the Philadelphia Eagles’ epic collapse down the stretch. That is now 19 straight seasons there have been no repeat winner in this division. Philly is the heavy favorite to win the NFC East this season, with Dallas a close second and Washington and the NY Giants battling for third. It’s always a fun division to watch – good and bad – so let’s dive in.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (-145)

The Eagles were well on their way to another Super Bowl appearance after a 10-1 start, but the team stumbled to a 1-5 finish, lost the division and then got blown out in the wild card round to Tampa Bay. Despite all of that, the Eagles remain the most talented team in the division and have added new offensive and defensive coordinators in Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio respectively.

The Eagles extended the contracts for wideouts A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, while adding elite running back Saquon Barkley. Although the team – and fans – will miss All-Pro center Jason Kelce following his retirement, they have a reliable replacement in 2022 second-round pick Cam Jurgens.

Odds to Win NFC East (as of 7/22/24):
Philadelphia Eagles -145
Dallas Cowboys +175
Washington Commanders +1000
New York Giants +1600

DALLAS COWBOYS (+175)

It was a very quiet and disappointing offseason for the Cowboys, who are now almost 30 years removed from a Super Bowl title. Dallas lost several starters and key rotational players including Tony Pollard and left tackle Tyron Smith, and didn’t do much in free agency. First-round pick Tyler Guyton might not even start at offensive tackle, and the team bypassed significantly better defensive talent still on the board.

Ezekiel Elliott, who is well past his prime, is now the lead running back. Dak Prescott is coming off another big season, but doesn’t have much of an offensive line to protect him. Dallas heads into training camp having to deal with top wideout CeeDee Lamb’s contract negotiations and not much depth at the wide receiver position.

WASHINGTON COMMANDERS (+1000)

Washington is starting their rebuilding process with a new owner, general manage, head coach and quarterback. Dan Quinn takes over for Ron Rivera and will have a super-talented signal caller in Jayden Daniels. Kliff Kingsbury and Brian Johnson will be running the offense and that could yield some terrific results by the end of the season.

Daniels will have very reliable wide receivers in Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson, something a rookie quarterback rarely gets right away. Also, the offense will have the versatile Austin Ekeler in the backfield, as well as dependable tight end Zach Ertz. Several key players followed Quinn from Dallas, including center Tyler Biadasz, defensive end Dorance Armstrong, and edge-rusher Dante Fowler Jr.

Season Win Totals (as of 7/22/24):
Philadelphia Eagles 10.5 o135
Dallas Cowboys 9.5 o180
Washington Commanders 6.5 o125
New York Giants 6.5 u150

NEW YORK GIANTS (+1600)

I’m picking the Giants to finish last, as many experts believe. This team has struggled for over a decade and the outlook remains the same: bleak. Rumors were that the Giants would trade up and draft a new franchise quarterback with the sixth pick, but instead went with wide receiver Malik Nabers to help Daniel Jones.

Over the past three seasons, Jones has failed to surpass 15 touchdown passes in a single year. In free agency, the Giants added offensive linemen Jermaine Eluemunor, Jon Runyan Jr., and Aaron Stinnie. Lack of roster depth remains a concern and a big reason this team is not ready to compete for an NFC East title.

Jay’s Season Win Total Best Bet: I think the Commanders are going to surprise a lot of people this season, especially on offense. I know they have a rookie quarterback, but we’ve seen a lot of first-year signal-callers succeed right away. Daniels inherits a lot of talent around him, which will help. There are also some winnable games on the schedule. I wouldn’t be shocked if Washington finished in second place, ahead of Dallas.

Commanders OVER 6.5 -125

Jay’s Pick to Win Division: This is a simple choice here. The Eagles have the best talent in the division by far and are eager to rebound from a disastrous finish in 2023. The pieces are still there to win a Super Bowl and the schedule is very manageable.

Eagles -145
