Two teams battling for playoff positioning in their respective conferences will battle Monday night in Portland, as the Blazers host the Brooklyn Nets on NBA TV. The Blazers are looking to complete a perfect 4-0 homestand and stay within striking distance of third-place Houston in the Western Conference standings. Currently, Portland is just one game back of the Rockets after Saturday’s 117-112 win over the Detroit Pistons. Guard Damian Lillard continues to pick up some of the scoring slack with injured backcourt mate C.J. McCollum still out with a knee injury. While the Blazers wrap-up their homestand, the Nets continue a long seven game road trip in which they lost the first three, but took the last two including a 111-106 win at Staples Center versus the Lakers on Friday. Brooklyn, Detroit, and Miami are currently battling each other for the 6-8 spots in the Eastern Conference with just a few weeks left in the regular season. The Nets have the sixth spot right now and are 2.5 games clear of the No. 9 slot. Portland has won six of the last seven meetings including a 113-99 win in Brooklyn on February 21st.
The Nets came back from a 25-point deficit to defeat the Kings last week in an epic rally that was led by D’Angelo Russell’s 27 fourth quarter points, but the former Los Angeles Laker helped eliminate his former team from playoff contention three nights later. Russell recorded 21 points and 13 assists in the win over the Lakers, while the Nets received 36 points off the bench from Spencer Dinwiddie and Ed Davis, with the latter also recording 15 rebounds in 20 minutes of action. Joe Harris added 26 points and has drained 13-of-23 from beyond the arc on the road trip. Brooklyn will end their long road trip close to home – in Philadelphia Thursday.
With McCollum missing his third straight game, Lillard recorded 28 points and nine assists in the win over the Pistons and is averaging 30.3 points and 12 assists in the three games since McCollum went out. Forward Al-Farouq Aminu also chipped in a solid effort Saturday with nine of his 22 points coming in the fourth quarter. Aminu (8-of-13) helped the Blazers shoot 54.4 percent from the floor – their best mark in a home game since the middle of January. Portland now heads to the road for four games beginning in Chicago on Wednesday.
The Nets have to be worn out after this long and grueling trip, while the Blazers look to put the finishing touches on a perfect homestand. Portland has been pretty solid versus the number at home this year (22-14-1 ATS) and have covered 16 of their last 21 on one days rest. Lay the points.
