The surging New York Mets can do no wrong right now and look to build on their momentum of Friday night’s ninth-inning comeback when they host the Washington Nationals again on Saturday. Michael Conforto laced an RBI single to right field to cap a four-run ninth inning comeback over the Nationals, as the Mets moved closer to a National League wild-card playoff berth with a stunning 7-6 win. It was New York’s seventh straight victory to move them into the second NL wild-card spot pending Friday’s late action. The Mets, who began the day tied with the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies, a half-game back of the Milwaukee Brewers, were eight games out of the second wild card 15 days ago. The Nationals, meanwhile, still are atop the NL wild-card standings despite having their three-game winning streak snapped. Anthony Rendon had an RBI triple in the fourth and a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh for the Nationals. Juan Soto hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Trea Turner scored on a wild pitch for what appeared to be an insurance run in the ninth. Pete Alonso homered for the fourth straight game – one shy of the team record – when he launched a two-run shot into the left field seats for his 38th of the season. Saturday’s contest will feature a terrific pitching matchup with Washington’s Patrick Corbin opposing New York’s Noah Syndergaard.
Pitchers: Nationals – Patrick Corbin (9-5, 3.43 ERA) | Mets – Noah Syndergaard (8-5, 3.96)
Washington is 7-2 in Corbin’s last nine starts but the latest one was his worst of the bunch. Corbin allowed five runs and seven hits over 5.1 innings at Arizona on Sunday after surrendering three runs or less in his previous eight outings. The lefty is 2-2 in four starts against the Mets this season with both losses coming in New York, where he’s allowed a total of seven runs and 12 hits – five homers – in 11 innings.

Syndergaard has rebounded from a rough outing at home against San Diego with two gems – and Mets wins – working 14.1 innings and allowing one earned run and eight hits while striking out 14. He recorded his fifth straight quality start after scattering one run and three hits across seven innings to earn a win at Pittsburgh on Sunday. Syndergaard is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 20 innings in three starts against Washington this season.
It’s hard to go against the Mets right now, especially with Syndergaard on the mound. Corbin has been solid all season, but has been roughed up in his two trips to Citi Field. I say the Mets keep the train rolling tonight behind Syndergaard.
