According to oddsmakers, the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers were supposed to be playing in the NLCS, but two resilient teams in the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals didn’t care. The matchup is set for Game 1 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis as the Cardinals host the Nationals in the National League Championship Series that should be really competitive. Both clubs have come up with timely hits and strong pitching in getting to this point. St. Louis used a shocking 10-run first inning on Wednesday to win Game 5 of their NLDS against the Braves, with Marcell Ozuna and Paul Goldschmidt leading the way with .429 batting averages in the series. Washington trailed 2-1 in the series and 3-1 in Game 5 before back-to-back solo homers off reliever Clayton Kershaw brought the team back to life. L.A. couldn’t do anything off the Nationals bullpen and Howie Kendrick provided the big blow with a grand slam in the 10th inning of a 7-3 victory. The Nationals, who were 19-31 at one point this season, are playing in the franchise’s first NLCS since the Montreal Expos lost in five games to the Dodgers in 1981. St. Louis took five of the seven meetings during the regular season including two of three at home back in the middle of September.

Pitchers: Nationals – Anibal Sanchez (0-0, 1.80 ERA) | Cardinals – Miles Mikolas (1-0, 1.50)

Sanchez is back in a championship series for the first time since pitching for the Detroit Tigers in 2013 and is 2-5 with a 2.98 ERA in nine career postseason games (eight starts). He came away with a no-decision in Game 3 of the NLDS after pitching five innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out nine. Sanchez was not sharp in his only outing against the Cardinals this season, allowing three runs, five hits, and two walks over five frames of a 3-2 loss.

Mikolas also received a no-decision in his only NLDS start against Atlanta despite a solid effort. The righty allowed one run on just three hits over five innings, but only had two strikeouts. Then he came on in Game 4 to earn a victory by pitching just one inning when Yadier Molina provided a walk-off RBI in the bottom of the 10th. Mikolas pitched 12 innings over two starts versus the Nationals this season, allowing four runs and 15 hits in splitting those two contests.

This series has seven games written all over it and both teams come in with some momentum. We’ll see some great pitching throughout this series, but I’m predicting not so much in Game 1. I believe both offenses can get to their starting pitchers and I still don’t have much faith in the Washington bullpen despite a great performance in Game 5 against the Dodgers. Take the over.
