Washington (3-3) at Houston (3-3)
When: Wednesday, October 30th 2019
Where: Minute Maid Park,
Houston, Texas
Time: 8:07 ET | TV: FOX
Opening Odds: Houston -110/7.5
For the fourth time in six years, we’ll have a Game 7 of the World Series as the Washington Nationals battle the Houston Astros for all the marbles on Wednesday night. The Nationals feel right at home in Minute Maid Park, winning for the third time this series and recorded their seventh straight postseason victory away from home. Houston came into Game 6 as -175 favorites over at Bovada with their future Hall of Famer on the mound. But, Washington kept Justin Verlander winless in his World Series career thanks to homers from Anthony Rendon, Juan Soto, and Adam Eaton in the 7-2 win to force a deciding contest. Rendon, a Houston native, went 3-for-4 with five RBI, while Stephen Strasburg was brilliant after allowing two runs in the first. Nationals ace Max Scherzer, who was scratched from a Game 5 start because of neck spasms, has been cleared to pitch in Game 7 and was actually warming up in the bullpen late on Tuesday. Scherzer received a pain-killing injection Sunday and the fast recovery gives himself the chance to start the biggest game of his career and manager Dave Martinez said he will not be on a pitch limit. Martinez was ejected in the seventh inning of Game 6, the first manager to be thrown out of a World Series game since Atlanta’s Bobby Cox in 1996. Veteran right Zack Greinke will get the ball for Houston in the winner-take-all affair.
Pitchers: Nationals – Max Scherzer (3-0, 2.16 ERA) | Astros – Zack Greinke (0-2, 5.30)
Scherzer should have his starting catcher back behind the plate on Wednesday, as Kurt Suzuki (hip) is expected back after leaving Game 3. Scherzer won Game 1 in Houston when he allowed two runs, five hits, three walks and struck out seven over five innings. He was fitted for a neck brace on Monday in order to fly with the team to Houston but then woke up Tuesday morning feeling significantly better. Scherzer will be making his third World Series start, having made his first in 2012 for the Detroit Tigers.
Greinke has looked much better after losing his first two starts this postseason, allowing nine runs in 9.2 innings to Tampa Bay and the New York Yankees. He’s rebounded with a pair of no-decisions despite allowing a combined two runs over nine innings, but has walked seven. The Astros acquired Greinke from the Arizona Diamondbacks at the July 31 trade deadline for these type of games. He’s allowed one run in 12 total innings against the Nationals this season including the playoffs.
I’ve taken the Nationals in every game so far, and I’m not deviating from that here. I’m not too worried about Scherzer because he’s seems healthy and ready to go for now, but if he isn’t, Washington still has Anibal Sanchez and Patrick Corbin to use behind him. Houston won’t have Verlander, and Cole wouldn’t be able to pitch much, if at all. This has been an unprecedented series so far with the road team winning every game, and I’ll stick with that trend.
Thanks for following our Baseball picks all season – it’s sure been fun. We’ll see you in March. Enjoy the game!
