So much for homefield advantage, huh? The series price for this year’s World Series has taken a few big swings, with the Astros big favorites coming in, then after the Nationals took the first two games on the road, they became the heavy betting favorites. Houston’s pitching completely shut down Washington’s bats in the Nation’s Capital over the weekend, and took back control of the series and can win their third title in three seasons by winning one of the next two games – at Minute Maid Park. The Nationals had all the momentum in the world coming back home, but scored one run in each of the three games at Nationals Park and went a dismal 1-for-21 with runners in scoring position. Leadoff man Trea Turner went 1-for-14 for Washington with three strikeouts and zero walks over the weekend, as the Nats just couldn’t get anything going offensively after scoring 17 runs in Houston during the first two contests. The Astros won the 2017 World Series with a clinching Game 7 victory on the road but can try to close this one out at Minute Maid Park, where they were an MLB-best 60-21 during the regular season. Houston second baseman Jose Altuve has been as consistent as they come this postseason, batting .360 in the World Series, .350 in the ALDS and .348 in the ALCS. Game 2 starters Stephen Strasburg and Justin Verlander will battle once again in Game 6.
Pitchers: Nationals – Stephen Strasburg (4-0, 1.93 ERA) | Astros – Justin Verlander (1-3, 4.15)
Strasburg outdueled Verlander in last week’s Game 2 by allowing just two runs over six innings with seven strikeouts in the 12-3 rout. He is 4-0 this postseason and his career ERA in October is now 1.34. He allowed just a two-run homer to Alex Bregman in Game 2 and boasts 40 strikeouts across 28 innings this postseason.
Verlander hasn’t had any success when it comes to the World Series, even though he is a cinch Hall of Famer when his career is over. He is now 0-5 with a 5.73 ERA in six World Series starts after allowing four runs in six innings back in Game 2’s loss. Verlander has allowed four runs in three different starts this postseason.
I don’t know if Verlander is getting tired or what, because he’s always been a big game pitcher, but the last two starts have me a little worried about putting money on him. Besides Gerrit Cole, Strasburg has been the best pitcher this postseason and has a chance to send this to a Game 7. Washington has won six road games in a row and I think they can do it again.
