It’s never a good thing when you get swept in a three-game series, but when you’re swept at home to the Miami Marlins, it’s just downright sad. The Philadelphia Phillies, who had a 3.5-game lead in the National League East on May 29th, dropped their seventh straight and 16th of 22 overall to fall 6.5 games back of the Atlanta Braves. The Phillies have just 15 runs and 45 hits during their season-long skid, while surrendering 43 runs on 70 hits including 16 by the Marlins in Sunday’s 6-4 setback. Jay Bruce, who came into the weekend batting .348 since being acquired at the end of May, went 0-for-12 over the weekend to drop that average to .276. Bryce Harper homered on Saturday and has three RBI and three runs scored during his four-game hitting streak. The Phillies will look to turn things around when they open a four-game series with the New York Mets on Monday. New York is 3-4 on their 11-game road trip after Sunday’s 5-3 at the Chicago Cubs after taking the middle two games of their four-game set at Wrigley Field. Rookie sensation Pete Alonso homered again – his 27th of the season to break Darryl Strawberry’s franchise rookie record, but is just 3-for-18 with seven strikeouts and no homers in six matchups with Philadelphia this season. Mets outfielder Jeff McNeil, who did not start on Sunday, has five consecutive multi-hit performances and is 10-for-22 with a homer against the Phillies this season.
Pitchers: Mets – Steven Matz (5-5, 4.28 ERA) | Phillies – Zach Eflin (6-7, 2.83)
Steven Matz has allowed three runs or more in each of his last four starts including five in as many innings last Wednesday in a 7-2 loss at Atlanta. Matz has a 6.21 ERA on the road but that was mainly because of the beating he took at Citizens Bank Park back on April 16th when he allowed eight runs without making an out. He faced the Phillies again six days later and allowed just one run over six innings to pick up the victory.

Zach Eflin has been the Phillies best starter but the team is just 1-5 in his last six starts and have scored just 3.29 runs a game for him on the season. Eflin suffered the loss last time out against Washington despite allowing two earned runs for a second straight outing. The righty was on the losing end of a 9-0 decision on April 23rd against the Mets when he surrendered four runs (three earned) on four hits in four innings of work and owns a career 5.40 ERA against them.
Nobody should be putting their hard-earned money on the Phillies until they get their offense going. They are hitting close to .200 over their last 10 games and to make matters worse, their bullpen ERA is 8.36 in that span. The Mets have a couple of hot hitters in McNeil and Alonso and they should help the Mets get passed the Phillies in the series opener.
