The two favorites in the National League East will begin an important three-game series on Tuesday night in Atlanta, as the Braves host the New York Mets. The Braves currently lead the division by three games over the surprising Miami Marlins thanks to an NL-best 20-10 road record. The Mets are sitting 5.5 games back after getting swept over the weekend by the Toronto Blue Jays.

New York was gaining momentum with a three-game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies last week, but managed just five runs in three games at home versus the Blue Jays. The rotation is lining up nicely for the series against Atlanta with veterans Carlos Carrasco, Just Verlander and Max Scherzer set to take on the defending NL East champs.

Atlanta is coming home after a 3-3 road trip that started with back-to-back loses to the worst team in Baseball – the Oakland A’s. The Braves responded with a series win at Arizona thanks to a Eddie Rosario go-ahead grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning to give Atlanta an 8-5 win on Sunday.

Both teams were off on Monday and will be playing each other in Atlanta for the first time since the memorable series to end the 2022 regular season. The Braves swept that series by beating Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt. Those wins gave the Braves a 10-9 win in the season series and the division title tiebreaker when both teams finished 101-61.

Pitchers: Mets – Carlos Carrasco (2-2, 5.74) | Braves – Bryce Elder (3-0, 1.92)

The Mets won for the fourth time in a row when Carrasco starts thanks to a ton of run support. However, Carrasco has done well, giving up two runs or fewer in three of those outings. He earned his second win last Wednesday, when he gave up one run over six innings as the Mets beat the Phillies 4-1. Carrasco is 2-2 with a 4.30 ERA in five career games (four starts) against the Braves.

Bryce Elder gets the series-opening start for Atlanta and is coming off a no-decision last Tuesday, when he surrendered one run over 7 1/3 innings in the Braves’ 2-1 loss to the Athletics. He has allowed two earned runs or less in seven straight starts and the Braves are 8-3 when Elder starts.

The Mets have had all sorts of trouble with the Braves no matter who’s on the mound. The Braves have won six of the last seven meetings including four in a row at home. Elder has been terrific all season and has the clear advantage over Carrasco.
