Opening Odds: Boston -120/9

The Boston Red Sox return from a rough road trip to host the surprising Miami Marlins on Tuesday night at Fenway Park. Boston won six straight games including the first two of their seven-game road trip before dropping four of their final five. The offense went cold in the three games at the Chicago White Sox, scoring a total of eight runs in losing two of three.

The Marlins only scored seven runs in their last three games, but won two of those against a reeling Pittsburgh Pirates team. Miami used strong pitching the whole series and rookie Eury Perez capped the weekend off by striking out nine and extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 21 in Sunday’s 2-0 win.

Justin Turner has reached base multiple times in nine of his past 15 games for Boston, but the Red Sox managed just two hits after the third inning on Sunday. Outfielder Adam Duvall had two of the team’s five total hits. The Marlins have dropped nine of the last 10 meetings with the Red Sox and the Under is 6-4 in that stretch. Boston opened this game as a -120 favorite with a total of 9.

Pitchers: Marlins – Sandy Alcantara (2-6, 5.08) | Red Sox – Garrett Whitlock (4-2, 4.50)

Sandy Alcantara, the reigning NL Cy-Young winner, as struggled most of the season. However, he has pitched at least seven innings in three of his past four outings and six in total this season. Alcantara has allowed five runs and 10 hits in each of his two most recent games including against Toronto last Wednesday. His only career start against Boston was on Sept. 15, 2020, working six innings of one-run ball.

Garrett Whitlock has been going deep into games, working seven innings in back-to-back starts. He received a no-decision after allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out six last Wednesday at Minnesota. Boston is 5-2 in Whitlock’s last seven starts.

Alcantara hasn’t been good this year, but I still trust him against this Boston team. Alcantara has pitched well in two of his last three road starts and the Marlins bullpen has been solid. I’m looking for a low-scoring game with Alcantara outdueling Whitlock.
