Opening Odds: San Francisco -148/7.5
The San Francisco Giants return home from a long 10-game road trip that took them from coast-to-coast and will entertain the Miami Marlins in the beginning of a three-game set on Monday night. The Marlins come in playing some of their best baseball of the season, winning five of their last seven games, which includes a series victory over the San Francisco Giants at home. Miami began its nine-game road trip by taking two of three from the major league-worst Baltimore Orioles over the weekend after dropping the finale 10-4 on Sunday. First baseman Justin Bour homered twice for the Marlins after going 19 straight games without one. The Giants could use a power surge of their own after avoiding a three-game sweep at the rival Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend with a 4-1 victory on Sunday but totaled seven runs in the series. San Francisco will try to get the bats going on Monday against Marlins lefty Caleb Smith while countering with rookie Andrew Suarez – both of whom faced each other last week in Miami.
Pitchers: Marlins – Caleb Smith (5-6, 3.75 ERA) | Giants – Andrew Suarez (2-4, 4.92)
Smith’s last start came against the Giants back at Marlins Park and even though he did not factor into the decision, the Marlins picked up the win. Smith allowed three runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings against the Giants and has surrendered three or fewer earned runs in eight of his last 10 outings.
Suarez went up against Smith on Wednesday and allowed two runs on five hits and two walks across five innings. Suarez did not factor into the decision as well and has failed to complete six innings in four of his last five starts and is 1-1 in that span. Suarez is better at home, where he owns a 1-2 record with a 3.55 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP.
This is a good spot to take an underdog here. The Marlins just took three of four from San Francisco and Smith has been a pleasant addition to the Miami rotation. The Giants are struggling to score right now, so the under may also be a play.
