The Tampa Bay Rays have the best record in Baseball, but if they look over their shoulders, they’ll find the New York Yankees right on their tail. New York has roared back after a 6-9 start to win 14 of their last 19 games to pull within two games of the Rays in the American League East, despite an injury-plagued roster. The Yankees continued their dominance over the Seattle Mariners on Monday and look to make it seven in a row at home against them when they play the second of a four-game series on Tuesday. New York jumped all over Felix Hernandez on Monday thanks to home runs by Luke Voit, Brett Gardner and Thairo Estrada – the first of his career – to build a 7-0 lead after three innings and hold on for a 7-3 victory. Voit, who has six homers and 14 RBIs over his last 13 games, is batting .386 with seven homers and 37 RBIs with runners in scoring position since making his Yankee debut last August. The Yankees have not lost a season series to Seattle since 2003 (12-0-4) and are off to a 1-0 start in 2019. The Mariners hit two more home runs on Monday to give them 70 for the season – the most in club history through 37 games, but their 13-2 start to the season is a thing of the past. Dee Gordon, who is second to Boston’s Andrew Benintendi with a .489 batting average with runners in scoring position, belted one of the homers Monday, with Domingo Santana getting the other. Even including Sunday’s 10-0 win over Cleveland, Seattle has been outscored 60-25 while dropping seven of its last eight.
Pitchers: Mariners – Marco Gonzales (5-1, 3.28 ERA) | Yankees – Masahiro Tanaka (2-3, 3.92)
Gonzales allowed six runs on five hits and three walks in 1.2 innings in his last outing against the Chicago Cubs. It was the most runs he’s allowed since a start against Houston last August and it happens to be the last time he lost a decision. Three of those runs against the Cubs last week were unearned because the Mariners have the worst defense in Baseball, but he was still not sharp. Gonzales went 6-0 with a 2.45 ERA since his last loss, never allowing more than three earned runs. His only career start against the Yankees came last June when the Yankees got to him for six runs in 6.1 innings.

Masahiro Tanaka has been inconsistent all season and the Yankees are just 2-5 when he starts, but both of those wins came at home. Tanaka was touched up in his last two outings – both on the road – when he allowed a total of nine runs (eight earned) in 9.2 innings of work in losses to the L.A. Angels and Arizona Diamondbacks. Tanaka has owned the Mariners in his career to the tune of a 7-0 mark and 2.02 ERA in eight starts.
This is a classic example of two teams going in opposite directions. The Mariners have nothing going for them right now. Even Gonzales suffered a rare loss last time out and was not good in his start against New York last season. The Yankees are on a roll right now and this is a pretty good price at home with a pitcher who’s never lost to Seattle in eight tries.
