Most figured the 13-2 start to the season the Seattle Mariners had was just a fluke. Well, it turns out they were right. Seattle has fallen on hard times since that scorching start and are 5-14 since after losing for the fifth straight time Friday – a 2-1 setback to the Cleveland Indians. The Mariners, who were averaging almost eight runs a game in their first 15 games, have scored eight runs during their five game losing streak, and five of them came in one game. The pitching has not been much better, allowing 46 runs in four games prior to last night. Mitch Haniger is just a few of the Seattle bats that has cooled off. He hit seven homers and drove in 18 runs in his first 26 games, but is just 2-for-25 with no homers and one RBI in his last seven. Dee Gordon has multiple hits in four of his last six games but has crossed the plate just once in that span. Cleveland, which is last in the American League with a .212 team batting average, managed just four hits in Friday’s victory and worked a pair of walks in the bottom of the ninth inning before the game-winning RBI single from pinch hitter Tyler Naquin. First baseman Carlos Santana leads Cleveland with a .314 batting average but was hitless in three at-bats Friday.
Pitchers: Mariners – Mike Leake (2-3, 4.98 ERA) | Indians – Carlos Carrasco (2-3, 5.86)
Mike Leake is in a bit of a tailspin after two solid outings to start 2019 and got hit for nine runs (five earned) on 10 hits over five innings in a 15-1 loss to Texas last Saturday. Leake is winless in his last four outings including an April 16th setback to the Indians when he allowed two runs and eight hits across six innings. He was 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA in two starts against Cleveland last season.

Carlos Carrasco has also faced the Mariners this season and threw seven scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts in a 1-0 victory on April 17th. He is coming off a clunker in Houston in which he permitted four runs on six hits over 6.2 innings with eight strikeouts on Sunday after recording 11 scoreless innings in his previous two outings. Carrasco is 5-3 with a 3.51 ERA in nine career appearances (eight starts) versus Seattle.
I know Cleveland can’t hit, but Seattle can’t hit or pitch or field lately and are in a downward spiral that doesn’t show signs of ending. You can’t commit 38 errors in 34 games and expect to win. Reality has set in for the Mariners and I expect Carrasco to ring-up several more strikeouts Saturday. I’ll take my chances with the runline here, because Leake has not been very good.
