The seventh-seeded Orlando Magic pulled off the biggest upset thus far in the NBA Playoffs by taking down No. 2 seed the Toronto Raptors in Game 1 of their best-of-seven series Saturday with Game 2 set for Tuesday night. Part of the Raptors’ lack of success in their postseason history is the inability to seize control of a series early, as they dropped to 2-14 all-time in Game 1’s after Saturday’s 104-101 setback. Orlando’s DJ Augustin drained a tie-breaking three-pointer with 3.4 seconds left, then Toronto’s Kawhi Leonard air-balled a long range shot with a half-second to go that would have sent the game to overtime. Game 1 featured two big runs, with the Magic going on a 30-7 run to take a 57-41 lead, but the Raptors came right back with a 22-2 run that spanned the second and third quarters. Toronto point guard Kyle Lowry’s uneven success in his postseason career continued with a dud on Saturday, missing all seven of his shot attempts (0-for-6 from beyond the arc) and both of his free throw attempts to go scoreless. Orlando’s success shouldn’t come as a total shock to people after they posted the third-best record in the NBA after January 31st – 22-9 – trailing only Houston (24-8) and Milwaukee (24-9).

Augustin was clearly the player of the game for Orlando, connecting on 9-of-13 shots – including 4-of-5 from 3-point range – but the Magic did get contributions from several other key members. All five starters plus two bench players scored in double-figures including Evan Fournier, who contributed 16 points, while Aaron Gordon recorded a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds). Jonathan Isaac (11 points), Nikola Vucevic (11 points), Terrence Ross (10 points) and Michael Carter-Williams (10 points) were also key contributors.

Leonard (25 points) and forward Pascal Siakam (24 points and nine rebounds) were the main contributors for a Raptors team that sorely needs Lowry to step up his game offensively. Fred VanVleet scored 14 points off the bench, while starters Marc Gasol and Danny Green each added 13 points, as the Raptors were playing their first postseason game with Leonard. Toronto outshot Orlando 45.5 percent to 40.0 percent, but the difference was the 3-pointer, as the Magic were able to connect on almost 50 percent of their tries (14-of-29).

Orlando has covered the spread in 4 of the last 5 meetings with Toronto.

This Orlando team is no joke as evident of their record over the last two months. Lowry and the Raptors really seem to struggle in postseason play. I do think this series heads back to Orlando tied at one apiece, but the Magic will keep this within single-digits.
