The battle for the SEC regular season title seems to be coming down to just three teams and one of those – Louisiana State – will have a tough road test on Wednesday night. The LSU Tigers sit one game behind first place Tennessee and a half-game back of second place Kentucky as they get set to take on the 21st-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs on ESPN2. LSU is coming off a one-point loss to Arkansas on Saturday to deny their bid for their first 8-0 start in SEC play since 1981. The Tigers really should have won that game, but a season-high 21 turnovers is hard to overcome against anyone. The Tigers now hit the road for three of their next four games starting with Mississippi State on Tuesday. The Bulldogs are coming off a similar road stretch in which they went 3-2, playing four of those away from Starkville. Mississippi State is coming off a nice road win over rival Ole Miss on Saturday 81-75 behind 27 points from Quinndary Weatherspoon. The Bulldogs have only lost once in 11 home games this season, but will play back-to-back ranked teams this week including No. 5 Kentucky on Saturday.

One-and-done phenom Naz Reid broke out of a mini shooting slump to record 19 points and 10 rebounds versus the Razorbacks – his second double-double. Sophomore Tremont Waters leads the team in scoring at 15.1 points per game and went off for a season-high 36 in a win over Texas A&M last Wednesday. Waters was among 10 players nominated for the Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s top point guard and is averaging 6.0 assists on the season and leads the conference with 3.0 steals per game.

Weatherspoon leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 17.6, but has been even better lately, averaging 20.8 on 53.1 percent shooting of the last five contests. Guard Lamar Peters averages 12.9 points per game and had 24 against LSU in last season’s SEC tournament. Reigning SEC Freshman of the Week Reggie Perry scored 18 points at Alabama and followed it up with a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds versus the Rebels.

This is a really good LSU team that really plays well away from home. They’re 4-1 SU in true road contests and 6-2-1 ATS in all games outside of Baton Rouge. Mississippi State is not consistent enough for me to have faith in. They’ve only covered three of their last eight games overall and don’t defend very well. LSU should be able to eclipse 80 points in this one and come away with a road victory.
