The Tampa Bay Lightning are off to a quick 3-0 start to the season after their 6-3 win in Boston yesterday afternoon. Goalie Ben Bishop has started the first three games for the Lightning and is 7-2-0 with a 1.68 goals-against average in his career against the Red Wings. The Lightning are averaging 4.3 goals a game so far and ten different players have scored. Victor Hedman leads the team with 4 points and a +5. The one weak point in the Lightning’s game is their penalty killing. They have only killed 55% of power plays which ranks them 29th in the league. Tampa will conclude their 3-game road trip tonight before returning home on Thursday.
The Red Wings have also started out hot winning their first two games by a combined 8-3. Justin Abdelkader leads the way with four goals including a hat trick in their 4-0 opening night win over Toronto. Henrik Zetterberg has also contributed a goal and 4 assists. Dylan Larkin, a 19-year-old rookie, has added three points and a plus-6 rating. Detroit is expected to be without veteran center Pavel Datsyuk again Tuesday, but speedy forward Darren Helm possibly could make his season debut. Goalie Jimmy Howard had an easy 22-save shutout in the opener, while Petr Mrazek 47 saves in Detroit’s 4-3 win over Carolina. Howard is expected to be in goal tonight.
The Lightning have taken seven of the nine regular-season meetings over the last two seasons and rallied to beat the Red Wings in the first round of the playoffs in seven games this past April. I like the Lightning to keep that streak going tonight in Detroit.
Pick: Lightning +115
