LA Lakers (3-1) at Dallas (3-1)
When: Friday, November 1st, 2019
Where: American Airlines Center,
Dallas, Texas
Time: 9:35 ET | TV: ESPN
Opening Odds: Los Angeles -2/214.5
The Los Angeles Lakers and L.A. Clippers are expected to battle each other all season long for the Pacific Division crown, as possibly top seed in the Western Conference. The Lakers lost round one against their city rivals, but have rebounded nicely with three straight wins while covering the spread by at least 5.5 points in each victory. They now venture away from Staples Center for the first time this season when they begin a three-game road trip against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night – broadcast live on ESPN. Superstar Anthony Davis – in his first season with the Lakers – is off to a nice start and is coming off his best game to date. Davis had 40 points and 20 rebounds in Tuesday’s 120-91 blowout win over the Memphis Grizzlies to become the first Los Angeles player since Shaquille O’Neal in 2003 to put up at least 40 points and 20 boards in a single game. Dallas is also off to a 3-1 start and had nine players score in double digits in Tuesday’s 109-106 road win over the Denver Nuggets as 6-point underdogs. The Mavericks are 1-1 at home, but 0-2 ATS after losing outright as 3-point favorites against Portland on Sunday. The Lakers went 3-0 against the Mavericks last season (2-1 ATS) and have won the past five meetings (4-1 ATS).
The Lakers are just fine offensively with Davis and LeBron James, but it’s their defense that has impressed thus far, ranking third in the league in points allowed (97.5) and fourth in defensive field goal percentage (40.7). L.A. has won by an average of 19 points during their current three-game winning streak and received 23 points and eight assists from James in the win over Memphis on Tuesday. Forward Kyle Kuzma (foot) practiced with the South Bay Lakers of the G League on Wednesday and is expected to make his season debut against Dallas, making the roster even that much stronger. L.A. will be in San Antonio Sunday.
The Mavericks have their own super-duo in Krispas Porzingis and Luka Doncic, but it was the bench that carried the team in the road win over Denver on Tuesday. Porzingis had just 10 points on 4-of-14 shooting, while Doncic tallied 12 on 3-of-12 shooting. All five reserves who played versus Denver scored in double-digits and combined for 24-of-41 shooting and 61 points. Guard Tim Hardaway Jr. and forward Maxi Kleber tied for a team-high 14 points off the bench with the former going 4-of-6 from 3-point range after being just 2-of-17 over the first three games. The Mavericks will be at Cleveland on Sunday.
This should be a pretty tight game throughout, but I’ll go with LeBron and Davis in this one. The Mavericks haven’t shot the ball well and they’re allowing opponents to shoot 46.1 percent from the field.
