East Rutherford, NJ

Opening Odds: Jets -2/35
It’s been a rough few years for NFL football fans in New York, as neither the Jets or Giants have been relevant for some time now and the wait is not over. The teams will make their preseason debuts Thursday night in their annual affair at the field they both occupy – MetLife Stadium. Neither team is expected to compete for a postseason berth, but there are some encouraging signs that will give the organizations some hope, especially at the quarterback position. The Giants have won five of the last six regular season games played between these two teams, but it’s been since 2015 since the last one. The teams are scheduled for a Week 10 tilt in November with the Jets being the home team. Last season the Jets were 1-3 in the preseason, including a 22-16 loss to the Giants. The over is a perfect 4-0 in the last four preseason meetings and two of those games were one point affairs. The Giants missed the post season for the sixth time in seven years, and the Jets haven’t made the playoffs since the 2010 season. Most sportsbooks have the season total for both teams set at 6.5.
The Jets’ future lies in the hands of second-year quarterback Sam Darnold, who will see limited action in Thursday’s preseason opener. The depth chart under center after Darnold will be veteran Trevor Siemian, followed by former Giants backup Davis Webb and Washington State alum Luke Falk. The tight end position is something to watch over the next few weeks with starter Chris Herndon facing a four-game suspension for a DUI. Former Texans Tight End Ryan Griffin, who started 36 games throughout his six-year career in Houston has the inside track to start in Week 1 ahead of Daniel Brown, Eric Tomlinson, Trevor Wesco and Nick Truesdell.
After a disappointing 5-11 season, the Giants appear to in the midst of a quarterback change with Eli Manning nearing the end of his career – at least in New York. The Giants drafted rookie Daniel Jones in the first round to be Manning’s heir apparent. With superstar receiver Odell Beckham Jr. now in Cleveland, running back Saquon Barkley is left to carry the offensive load. He recorded over 2,000 total yards in year one and will look to build off of it. Don’t look for him to play much in the next four weeks, however. Beckham Jr. wasn’t the only veteran that was lost in the offseason, as Landon Collins, Jamon Brown, and Olivier Vernon have moved on.
I like the Jets quarterback depth in this game over New York’s, as Jones will need some time to get comfortable. The Jets and Giants play in the same stadium, but the team listed as ‘road’ has won nine of the last 10 meetings outright (eight preseason, two regular season).
