The New Orleans Pelicans are not going to the playoffs this year, but they appear to still have some fight left in them. The Pelicans completed a 3-1 road trip by winning the final three and the last two came in comeback fashion against the Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz. They will once again play the Jazz – this time at home – on Wednesday night after erasing a 17-point deficit en route to a 115-112 victory as 9.5-point underdogs. Two nights earlier, New Orleans trailed by as many as 19 points in Denver and shocked the Nuggets 120-112 as huge 13.5-point dogs. The Jazz will be looking for a little revenge Wednesday after the Pelicans snapped Utah’s four-game winning streak by forcing turnovers. Utah sits in the No. 6 spot in the crowded Western Conference, as teams 3-8 are separated by just four games in the standings. The Pelicans have lost five straight in New Orleans to the Jazz including a 132-111 decision back in October.
Leading scorer Donovan Mitchell (23.3 points) had an awful night against New Orleans, turning the ball over six times and was just 8-of-24 from the floor, as the Jazz committed 18 turnovers in the loss. Forward Joe Ingles was responsible for seven of those, but did dish-out a team-high 11 assists. Mitchell scored 19 points and missed a late jumper as he failed to reach 20 points for just the second time in the past 25 games. Rudy Gobert brought down 19 rebounds to go along with 19 points, but it was reserves Jae Crowder and Kyle Korver who led the team with 20 points each. The Jazz’s brief two-game homestand will conclude in Memphis on Friday.
Anthony Davis still leads the Pelicans in scoring, but that gap will narrow between now and the end of the season as New Orleans continues to use caution with their prized possession. Jrue Holiday and Julius Randle led the way Monday with 30 points apiece, with Davis coming in with 15 points in 22 minutes. Randle is averaging 25.8 points over the past eight games while Holiday is at 24.3 over that same stretch. Davis did grab 11 rebounds on Monday for his first double-double in almost a month.
The road team has won the last five meetings between these two and the Jazz are 9-1-1 ATS in the last 11 trips to Cajun country. The Pelicans don’t have a very good homecourt advantage and the Jazz will be looking for revenge. I’ll lay the points with Utah here.
