The Iowa Hawkeyes have been rising up the Big Ten standings by winning each of their last five games, but four of those were at home. Iowa will take their 3-2 road record into College Park to take on the Maryland Terrapins in a key conference matchup Thursday night. Both teams sit at 6-3, one game behind Illinois and Michigan State, and the Hawkeyes will host the Illini on Sunday. 18th-ranked Iowa is coming off a 68-62 home victory over Wisconsin on Monday, but their only road win in their last three tries came at lowly Northwestern on Jan. 14. The first win in their current streak was a 67-49 home rout of Maryland on Jan. 10, their first win in the series since Feb. 25, 2017. Maryland stayed in the race by rallying from a six-point deficit in the final 1:25 to edge Indiana 77-76 on Sunday. The Terrapins are back in the national rankings for the first time in a month by winning three in a row and put their 12-0 home record on the line Thursday night.
The Hawkeyes are one of the highest scoring teams in the country, ranking 19th at 79.6 points per game and scored 90 and 85 respectively in their wins over Michigan and Rutgers before being held to 68 versus the Badgers. Luka Garza has finished with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in nine games this season and a 21-point, 18-rebound effort on Monday. Guard C.J. Fredrick added 17 points while Joe Wieskamp finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. The Iowa bench produced only four points in 36 minutes versus Wisconsin, but were able to overcome a 12-point deficit with just over seven minutes to play. The Hawkeyes defense allows opponents to shoot just 30.6 percent from 3-point territory.
Maryland’s strength is on the defensive end, where they rank 25th in the country in points allowed (61.8) and 28th in defensive field goal percentage (38.8). The offense came alive in their last two victories – both on the road – scoring 77 in each with Jalen Smith leading the way with Big Ten Player of the Week honors. Smith averaged 27 points, 11 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots in those two victories and is 17-of-30 from 3-point range in conference games. Anthony Cowan Jr. added 18 points and four assists in the win over Indiana, while Darryl Morsell recorded 10 points and six rebounds. Maryland will host Rutgers on Tuesday.
Maryland has been perfect at home and Iowa has only beaten one team on the road with a winning record. The Terrapins defense will be the difference in this one as Maryland pulls away in the second half.
