The Cleveland Indians have had some bad luck injuries this season to their pitching staff, but will get one of them back on Monday when Mike Clevinger takes the mound to open a four-game series at the Texas Rangers. Clevinger has been out for over two months with a back injury and he’ll rejoin an Indians squad that is coming off a three-game sweep at Detroit and are winners of eight of their last 11 overall. Sunday’s 8-0 win at Detroit moved the Indians to within a half-game of Texas for the American League’s second wild card. First baseman Carlos Santana extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a hit on Sunday and is batting .287 on the season with only Francisco Lindor hitting for a higher average (.299). The Rangers are coming off an interleague series in Cincinnati in which they took the first two but lost 11-3 in Sunday’s finale to drop their road record to 14-21. They will begin a seven-game homestand against Cleveland and the Chicago White Sox at Globe Life Park where they are 24-12. Hunter Pence continued his career resurgence with a two-run homer on Sunday to give him 42 RBI in his last 41 games, but left the game with tightness in his right groin and will be re-evaluated on Monday. Fellow outfielder Nomar Mazara (hamstring) was held out of Sunday’s lineup and is expected to undergo an MRI on Monday.
Pitchers: Indians – Mike Clevinger (1-0, 0.00 ERA) | Rangers – Lance Lynn (7-4, 4.40)
Clevinger made two impressive starts to begin the season before getting hurt in his second start on April 7th. Clevinger allowed two hits and four walks while registering 22 strikeouts over 12 scoreless innings in those two outings versus Toronto and the Chicago White Sox. He is 0-1 with a 2.42 ERA in five career outings (three starts) against Texas.

Lance Lynn has been very steady this season, eating up a lot of innings while keeping the Rangers in games. He has posted a quality start in each of his last seven outings, going 3-2 with a 1.99 ERA in that stretch. Lynn has completed at least six innings in nine straight starts and is 4-0 at home in six starts and the Rangers have gone 5-1 in those games. He has allowed one run in 12 innings covering two starts in his career against Cleveland.
The Rangers have been money at home this season and Lynn has been doing just enough to help his team. Clevinger is making his first start in a while and I don’t like taking pitchers in those situations.
