The red-hot Portland Trail Blazers are flying under the radar and are positioning themselves well for the upcoming playoffs by climbing up the standings in the Western Conference. Portland will put its nine-game winning streak on the line Monday night when they host the Miami Heat at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon. Portland is currently in third place in the West, two games clear of a trio of teams vying for the No. 4 spot, but just 3.5 ahead of the No. 9 slot. It just goes to show you how tough the West is. Portland is four games better than Miami, but the Heat are 5.5 games clear of the nine-spot in the East. The Heat are currently holding down the No. 7 spot, with the third-place Cleveland Cavaliers only 2.5 games in front of them. Miami comes in hot with two straight wins over teams above it in the standings, including a 129-102 thumping of the Washington Wizards on Saturday. Portland has won the last four in the series, including a 102-95 victory at Miami in December.

Miami’s win over Washington on Saturday came at a cost as guard Dwyane Wade went down with a strained hamstring and does not expect to play on Monday. “I won’t be in the lineup against Portland, I can probably guarantee that,” Wade told reporters. Wade is averaging 15.7 points in six games this month and the team is 7-5 in 12 games since he was acquired from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Center Hassan Whiteside (hip), who averages 11.8 rebounds a game, sat out Saturday and is questionable for Monday. Miami had eight players score in double-figures on Saturday as they set a season-high mark of 129 points in the victory. The Heat will hit Sacramento and the L.A. Lakers to wrap-up the road trip.

The dynamic guard duo of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum combined for 58 points on Friday as Portland knocked off the defending champion Golden State Warriors 125-108. It was the second-most points the Blazers have scored in a game this season, but its the defense that has allowed opponents to score under Portland’s season average (103.2) in six of the last eight games. Veteran power forward Ed Davis has been a pleasant surprise off the bench, recording 10 or more rebounds in five of his last six games to bring his season average up to 7.6. Portland will continue their five-game homestand with a visit from the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday.
With Wade out and Whiteside not expected to play, Miami is going to have some trouble against this surging Portland team. Look for Lillard and McCollum to have big games once again and for the Blazers to shut down the Heat offense.
