The top two teams in the West Coast Conference will hook-up for the second time as the Gonzaga Bulldogs visit the Saint Mary’s Gaels on Saturday night in Moraga, California. The Gaels got the better of the Zags in the first meeting in Spokane – a 74-71 victory – and can all but wrap-up the WCC regular season title with a win over Gonzaga, as Saint Mary’s will face only one team – San Francisco (14-12) – with a winning record after Saturday’s showdown. Gonzaga has claimed at least a share of the conference crown in 17 of the last 18 season, and coach Mark Few knows this is a must-win game. “We’ve navigated our way back into where we’re still in the hunt for a league championship,” Few said after Gonzaga’s 71-61 victory at Pacific on Thursday night. Gonzaga has won 21 straight WCC road games since a 70-67 loss at Saint Mary’s on January 21st, 2016. Saint Mary’s leads the nation in field goal percentage (52.8) while Gonzaga is 13th (50.1).

Fighting through the flu, 6’10” forward Killian Tillie, had 21 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Pacific and is one of six Zags averaging in double figures (12.5 points per game). Senior forward Johnathan Williams (13.5 points) and senior guard Josh Perkins (13.2), returning starters from Gonzaga’s Final Four team last season, lead the team in scoring with freshman guard Zach Norvell Jr. (11.7), sophomore forward Rui Hachimura (11.1) and senior guard Silas Melson (10.0) also averaging double digits.

Senior center Jock Landale came up just one rebound shy of his 17th double-double of the season in Thursday night’s 83-62 victory at Loyola Marymount, finishing with 21 points and nine rebounds. He leads the Gaels in both scoring (22.7) and rebounding (10.7) and had 26 points and 12 rebounds in the first meeting with the Zags. Senior forward Calvin Hermanson is second in scoring (11.5) while shooting 46.2% from 3-point range and senior guard Emmett Naar (10.6) also is averaging in double figures and ranks second in the nation in assists with an average of 9.1 per game. Naar had 12 assists in the win over Loyola Marymount to give him a school career-record 769 assists, topping the previous mark of 768 set by fellow Aussie Matthew Dellavedova.
I believe Gonzaga’s run of regular season WCC titles is about to end. The Gaels played a brilliant game in Spokane, and now they return home to finish what they started. The Zags may get them in the WCC Tournament, but Saint Mary’s prevails in this one.
