Opening Odds: New England -13.5/46
Week 6 of the NFL season kicks off with the largest spread of the schedule with the New England Patriots 16.5-point favorites at home over the New York Giants. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady already has a record six Super Bowl rings, but could have eight if it weren’t for huge upsets by Eli Manning and the New York Giants in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI. Manning probably has taken his last snap as a starting quarterback for the Giants, replaced after Week 2 by first-round rookie Daniel Jones, while Brady and the Patriots just keep on rolling. New England is among two teams with a perfect record, but the reigning Super Bowl champions haven’t exactly been tested outside of the game at Buffalo. The Patriots have beaten three opponents that have yet to win a game and will play another team with a sub-.500 record on Thursday. New England is seeking its fourth 6-0 start under Bill Belichick thanks to a defense that has allowed a measly 34 points. The Giants are missing a key piece to their offense in running back Saquon Barkley, who has missed the past two games due to a high ankle sprain but is getting closer to returning according to coach Pat Shurmur. The Giants’ modest two-game winning streak came to an end in a 28-10 home loss to the Minnesota Vikings last weekend. The last regular-season meeting between the teams was in Week 10 of 2015 with the Patriots (8-0) escaping 27-26 in East Rutherford. Stephen Gostkowski hit a 54-yard field goal with one second left, but won’t play the rest of this season after injuring his hip. New York has covered the past five regular-season meetings and the under is 5-2 in the previous seven.
The Giants won their first two games under Jones, but reality set in last week when the Vikings defense limited him to 21-for-38 for 182 yards with a touchdown and interception. Backup running back Wayne Gallman left with a concussion and is doubtful for Thursday, leaving the Giants really thin at the position. Wide receiver Golden Tate made his season debut off suspension and had three catches for 13 yards. Fellow wideout Sterling Shepard is likely to miss the game due to a concussion, while tight end Evan Engram is dealing with a sprained medial collateral ligament and is questionable. While the Giants are getting pressure on the quarterback (13 sacks), they’re also giving up a ton of yards through the air, ranking 28th in the league at 279.4 yards per game. Linebackers Alec Ogletree (hamstring) and Tae Davis (concussion) both sat out and are questionable for Thursday. The Giants have covered eight straight games after scoring fewer than 15 points in the previous one.
New England remained unbeaten by throttling Washington 33-7, as the Redskins fired coach Jay Gruden a day later. Brady was 28-of-42 for 348 yards with three touchdowns and a pick, his 90th 300-yard effort of his career. He passed Brett Favre for third on the all-time passing yardage list and will pass Peyton Manning for second on Thursday. The defense held Washington to 220 yards and 1-for-11 on third down and it marked the fifth straight game that New England hasn’t allowed a TD pass. New England also leads the NFL in sacks (24) and interceptions (11). The Patriots are 4-1 ATS in their past five on Thursday.
I know this is a lot of points, but I just don’t know where the Giants are going to get their offense from. They have too many key injuries to keep this one close. Do yourself a favor and watch Game 5 of the ALDS instead. You can find my free pick for that game here and Bobby Babowski’s pick here.
