Dodgers vs Nationals NLDS Preview & Free Pick [Game 3]

LA Dodgers (1-1) at Washington (1-1)
When: Sunday, October 6th 2019
Where: Nationals Park,
Washington, DC
Time: 7:45 ET | TV: TBS
Opening Odds: Washington -135/8

It appears the Washington Nationals are going to ride pitchers Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg until their arms fall off in trying to topple the might Los Angeles Dodgers. The teams will head back to the Nation’s Capital for Game 3 of their 1-1 National League Division Series with Washington planning on starting Scherzer while L.A. goes with the well-rest Hyun-Jin Ryu. The Dodgers took the opener behind a dominant effort from Walker Buehler, but the Nationals got to Clayton Kershaw in Game 2 and received a dominant effort of their own from Strasburg before Scherzer came on in the eighth to strike out the side in the 4-2 victory. The Dodgers struck out 17 times in Game 2 and superstar Cody Bellinger has yet to show up, going 0-for-6 with four punch-outs. First baseman Max Muncy has been the hitting star for L.A., driving in four runs while going 3-for-6 through the first two games. The top of the Washington batting order – Trea Turner, Adam Eaton, and Anthony Rendon each recorded two hits in Friday’s victory, but the rest of the starting lineup went 3-for-18. Game 4 will be played on Monday.

Pitchers: Dodgers – Hyun-Jin Ryu (14-5, 2.32 ERA) | Nationals – Max Scherzer (0-0, 4.50)

Ryu was well on his way to a Cy Young before hitting a wall in August, but still managed to lead the National League with a 2.32 ERA by finishing strong. He pitched to a 1.29 ERA over this last three starts, while going seven innings in each of them. The Dodgers won both of Ryu’s starts this season against the Nationals after the South Korea native allowed a total of one run and nine hits over 14.2 innings while striking out 13.

There is a chance Scherzer could be scratched depending on how he feels Sunday morning after pitching on Friday, but I’m willing to bet the ultra-competitor in him wants to go. If not, Anibal Sanchez will get the nod and Scherzer could go on Monday. Scherzer allowed three runs on four hits – two homers – over five innings before turning things over to the bullpen in the wild card win over Milwaukee. He pitched seven strong innings in earning the win at Los Angeles back on My 11th.

The Dodgers are too good to lose this series, right? I wouldn’t panic yet if I were an L.A. fan, but they’ll need to stop striking out and get to the Nationals’ leaky bullpen. Ryu comes into the postseason with some momentum and I expect him to pitch good. I’ll take the Dodgers in this one.

**NOTE** If Scherzer can’t go, we will still take the Dodgers against Sanchez and will adjust the line accordingly.
