The Los Angeles Dodgers are back atop the National League West standings, while they look down to their rivals – the San Francisco Giants – at the basement of the division. The two teams, who are trending in opposite directions, will begin a three-game series at Oracle Park (formerly AT&T Park) on Monday night with L.A.’s Kenta Maeda looking to bounce back from his shortest outing of the season last time out. The Dodgers have won four in a row and first baseman Cody Bellinger is breaking all sorts of April record. The 2018 NLCS MVP has two days to become the first major-league player ever with 15 home runs before May 1st after belting No. 14 in yesterday’s 7-6 come-from-behind victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, finishing a three-game sweep. Bellinger finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and joined Albert Pujols (2006), Alex Rodriguez (2007) and Christian Yelich (2019) as the only players to hit 14 home runs before the end of April. Bellinger already has the club mark for most hits in March/April (44) and the major-league record for total bases (94) before May 1st. The Giants don’t have any bats in their lineup with even half the amount of production Bellinger puts out, and are coming off being swept at home by the New York Yankees. Catcher Buster Posey, who leads the team with a .247 average, is hitting .360 over his last seven games after batting .196 over his first 17 games. San Francisco dropped two of three at Dodger Stadium in early April but were outscored by just one run total (13-12).
Pitchers: Dodgers – Kenta Maeda (3-2, 5.20 ERA) | Giants – Jeff Samardzija (2-1, 3.00)
Maeda has been hit hard in his last two road starts, but mixed in a win over Cincinnati at home, allowing one run in 6.2 innings. His latest outing was a loss to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday in which he surrendered six runs on seven hits and three walks across four innings. Maeda does not have a good track record at Oracle Park, going 0-2 with an 8.16 ERA in six career appearances (three starts).

Jeff Samardzija will make his sixth start and he’s been much better at home in his two outings, recording a 0.94 WHIP. Overall, he has allowed three runs or fewer four times including last time out against the Blue Jays. Samardzija won for the second time this season after limiting Toronto to two runs in 5.1 innings. He is 1-4 with a 4.06 ERA in eight career appearances (six starts) against the Dodgers.
Maeda doesn’t pitch great on the road, but this San Francisco offense is terrible now, ranking 29th in runs (3.21) and dead last in OPS (.617). The Dodgers are cruising and have had success against Samardzija in the past. I’ll lay the big price on the road with confidence.
