LA Dodgers (11-12) at San Francisco (11-13)
When: Friday, April 27th 2018
Where: AT&T Park, San Francisco, CA
Time: 10:15 ET | TV: SportsNet LA, NBCS Bay Area
Opening Odds: Los Angeles -138/8.5
The Los Angeles Dodgers are licking their wounds after losing two-straight at home to the lowly Miami Marlins, including a loss when Clayton Kershaw started, and will embark on a season-high 11-game road trip when they visit rival San Francisco on Friday night. L.A. had won seven of eight including the series opener with Miami, before dropping the last two and will get a Giants team that is beginning to heat up. San Francisco took two of three from both the L.A. Angels and Washington Nationals as outfielder Mac Williamson has provided a spark offensively. Williamson has homered twice in four starts since being called up from Triple-A Sacramento to fill-in for veteran Hunter Pence, who was batting .172 when he landed on the disabled list with a thumb sprain last week. Pence will begin a minor-league rehab assignment on Friday and then the Giants will have some decisions to make. Los Angeles has their own outfield issues with veteran Matt Kemp hitting .313 with four homers and 12 RBIs, Yasiel Puig batting .195 with no homers and could begin sharing time with Joc Pederson, who has swung a hot bat with six hits in his last 19 at-bats. Two lefties will take the mound Friday as the undefeated Hyun-Jin Ryu opposes the winless Derek Holland.
Pitchers: Dodgers – Hyun-Jin Ryu (3-0, 1.99 ERA) | Giants – Derek Holland (0-3, 4.98)
Ryu has been L.A.’ best pitcher thus far – including Kershaw – and has held opponents to a measly .141 batting average and is coming off a win against the Nationals in which he allowed two hits over seven scoreless innings. Ryu has gone at least six innings and recorded at least eight strikeouts in each of his last three starts. He is 4-6 with a 3.38 ERA in 12 career starts against the Giants, including 0-2 with a 1.17 ERA in three outings last season.
Holland is still looking for his first victory of 2018 and allowed four runs in six innings against the Los Angeles Angels last Saturday. The long-ball has been an issue for Holland after he served up 31 in 29 games last season as a member of the Chicago White Sox and allowed three in the 4-3 loss to the Angels. He is 0-2 with a 6.30 ERA in two career starts against the Dodgers after pitching five innings in a loss on March 31st.
The pitching matchup here is a total mis-match. Ryu has been strong this season and has good career numbers against San Francisco. Holland has been just the opposite this season and I expect the Dodgers to start their long road trip with a victory tonight.
