Opening Odds: Los Angeles -175/7
We are down to the last week of the Major League Baseball regular season and the National League West is still up for grabs. Currently, the Los Angeles Dodgers have a 1.5-game lead over the Colorado Rockies, and will begin a three-game series with the reeling Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night at Chase Field. The D’Backs were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday, but are hoping to prevent a celebration on their home field by the Dodgers, whose magic number to clinch the National League West is six. Manny Machado, Austin Barnes and Matt Kemp homered while Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched six scoreless innings on Sunday as the Dodgers cruised to a 14-0 victory over San Diego, giving them nine wins in their last 11 games overall. Kemp went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs while Max Muncy drove in four runs for Los Angeles, which took two of three from the Padres and sit one game behind Atlanta for home-field advantage in next week’s NL Division Series. Arizona scored a total of three runs in three straight losses to Colorado over the weekend and has dropped 12 of its last 15. Chris Owings, Eduardo Escobar and David Peralta recorded two hits apiece in Sunday’s 2-0 setback as Arizona fell to 1-5 on its nine-game homestand. The Diamondbacks are 9-7 against the Dodgers this season, including a 5-2 record at home, but are just 38-40 at Chase Field this season.
Pitchers: Dodgers – Clayton Kershaw (8-5, 2.45 ERA) | Diamondbacks – Robbie Ray (6-2, 3.92)
Clayton Kershaw is coming off a no-decision on Tuesday despite allowing just two runs – one earned – on three hits and five walks over seven innings against Colorado. Kershaw has surrendered three earned runs or fewer in 23 of his 24 starts this season and two or less in 10 of 11. He is 15-9 with a 2.53 ERA in 30 career outings versus Arizona – including a 5-8 and 3.65 in 14 outings at Chase Field.
Robbie Ray has been on a real nice roll lately and allowed one hit with four walks and eight strikeouts in six scoreless innings versus the Chicago Cubs last week to earn his third straight victory. Ray has a 1.59 ERA with 46 strikeouts over 34 innings in his last six starts. He is 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA in his last five home outings and owns a 7-3 record and 2.63 ERA in 14 career starts versus Los Angeles.
As I mention in the video below, this is a great pitching matchup, but Ray won’t get enough run support tonight from an offense that is hitting .198 in their last 10 games. Kershaw will mow down the D’Backs and move L.A. one step closer to the NL West title.
