Dodgers vs Cubs Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [4/23/19]

LA Dodgers (15-9) at Chicago Cubs (10-10)
When: Tuesday, April 23rd, 2019
Where: Wrigley Field,
Chicago, Illinois
Time: 8:05 ET | TV: MLB Network
Opening Odds: Chicago -114

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs met in the 2017 NLCS and if they keep playing like they have been recently, they may just meet in the postseason this October. Both teams enter this three-game series at Wrigley Field with momentum after the Dodgers took three of four in Milwaukee over the weekend, while the Cubs are 3-0-1 in their last four series after taking two of three from Arizona at home. The Dodgers, who lead the NL West by 2.5 games over the San Diego Padres and Diamondbacks, have won seven of eight overall after a six-game losing streak and are in the middle of a seven-game road trip. L.A. has been doing it with the long ball all season, but the defense saved the day on Sunday, as Cody Bellinger robbed Christian Yelich of a potential third home run of the game in the eighth inning, then homered in the ninth to propel the Dodgers to a 6-5 win in Milwaukee. The Cubs got a walk-off single from David Bote Sunday to give them a 2-1 win and their pitching staff has turned it around after an ugly 1-6 start, allowing one run or fewer in four of the last five games.

Pitchers: Dodgers – Kenta Maeda (3-1, 3.80 ERA) | Cubs – Jose Quintana (2-1, 3.43)

Kenta Maeda has a decision in all four starts this season (3-1) and has benefited from a ton of run support. The Dodgers are averaging 9.0 runs a game in his four turns and his coming off his best outing of the season last time out. Maeda limited the Cincinnati Reds to one run and four hits over 6.2 innings. L.A. won both games he started against the Cubs last season – 4-3 and 2-1.

Jose Quintana has made three starts and has been brilliant in his last two after allowing eight runs, eight hits, and three home runs in three innings of work at Milwaukee on April 5th. Since then, Quintana has yet to allow a run over 14 innings of work while striking out 18 with just one walk. He is winless in three starts against the Dodgers despite allowing only three earned runs over 19.1 innings.

The Cubs won the 2018 season series 4-3 over the Dodgers. This is their first meeting of 2019.

The Dodgers have issues against left-handed pitchers (.196 AVG last 10 games) and Quintana is not a guy they really want to face right now. He’s been money in his last two outings and the Cubs’ bullpen has been a lot better recently. Chicago’s offense hasn’t been spectacular, but they’ll get just enough off Maeda to get the win here.
