This weekend’s Freeway Series has been lacking in offense, but not drama, as the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels get set for the rubber-match of their three-game series on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Neither team has recorded more than five hits in either of the first two games of this series with the Angels winning 3-2 in the opener and the Dodgers rebounding for a 3-1 victory on Saturday. All-Star third baseman Justin Turner has yet to hit better than .268 or drive in more than 10 runs in any of the three months since returning from the broken wrist in spring training that cost him the first 40 games of 2018, but came up with a key hit in Saturday’s win. The Dodgers lost their first two games with him back in the lineup just under two months ago but improved to 32-14 since May 16th as his two-run single in the fifth inning broke open a scoreless game. Mike Trout went 3-for-4 with a home run, snapping out of a 2-for-20 slump over his previous six games. Despite the loss, the Angels have won seven of the last 11 meetings in the Freeway Series. After going 8-for-12 against Pittsburgh in the previous series, Dodgers SS Chris Taylor is 0-for-8 with seven strikeouts this weekend. It will be a battle of lefties on Sunday as Alex Wood takes on Andrew Heaney.

Wood has evened his record at 5-5 after reeling off victories in his last four outings and is coming off a six-inning effort Monday versus Pittsburgh in which he allowed one run over six innings. Wood has yielded a homer in three consecutive starts but allowed a total of six earned runs during his winning streak. He will face the Angels for the first time and try to improve on his 3-6 record and 3.15 ERA in 18 interleague appearances (12 starts).
Heaney is coming off a solid outing against the Mariners on Tuesday, but was collared with the loss despite striking out 10 and allowing three runs over seven frames. Heaney has been much better at Angel Stadium, posting a 4-2 record with a 2.18 ERA and holding opponents to a .201 batting average. Heaney is 0-2 against the Dodgers, allowing seven runs over 10.1 innings in his two starts.
Runs and hits have been hard to come by this weekend in hot Los Angeles and you have a couple of lefties who are pitching well this year. The under is 7-1-1 in the Angels last nine games overall and five of the last six meetings between these two have gone under the total. I’ll stick with that trend.
