Opening Odds: San Diego -148/7

Two National League West foes, who are coming off rough weekends, will battle Monday night at Petco Park as the Arizona Diamondbacks visit the San Diego Padres. Arizona couldn’t gather any momentum before embarking on their 10-game road trip after dropping two of three at home over the weekend to last place San Francisco. The top of the D’Backs lineup – Adam Jones, Ketel Marte and Eduardo Escobar – went a combined 0-for-15 in Sunday’s loss and now must face one of the bright young hurlers in the majors in San Diego’s Chris Paddack. The Diamondbacks mustered just three hits in Sunday’s 10-inning, 3-2 setback but still sit second in the division, 5.5 games behind the L.A. Dodgers. San Diego has been in a bit of a tailspin after their encouraging 11-5 start, dropping seven of their last nine including three of four over the weekend to the Pittsburgh Pirates at home. Hunter Renfroe blasted a three-run homer in Sunday’s 6-4 loss, but the Padres fell to 7-12 without rookie star Fernando Tatis Jr. Arizona will send out righty Luke Weaver to oppose Paddack.

Pitchers: Diamondbacks – Luke Weaver (3-2, 3.16 ERA) | Padres – Chris Paddack (3-2, 1.99)

Paddack will get all the pub in this matchup, but don’t sleep on Luke Weaver. The former St. Louis Cardinal has been on fire lately, tossing three straight quality starts with an ERA of 2.25 and 19 strikeout over that span (20 innings). Weaver has allowed two earned runs or less in four of his last six starts including a 2-1 loss to Paddack and the Padres back on April 12th. Weaver, who is 2-2 with a 2.28 ERA in four career starts versus San Diego, is 3-0 with a 0.98 ERA in his last three road outings.

These teams have already met seven times in 2019 with the Padres holding a 4-3 edge.

Paddack is coming off his worst outing in this his rookie season, allowing six runs – three earned – in 4.2 innings at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. It was the first time he had allowed more than three runs in a game after surrendering two runs or less in six of his first seven big league outings. Paddack has compiled 49 strikeouts and just 11 walks in 45.1 innings this season.

Both teams are struggling at the plate and neither team hits righties very well either. These pitchers matched-up earlier in the season in Phoenix and it ended in a 2-1 game. I can see a similar low-scoring affair in this one in a pitcher-friendly park. All four of Paddack’s home starts have gone under.
