The New York Mets look to stay in the National League Wild Card race while the Arizona Diamondbacks are trying to play spoilers. Arizona bounced back from a 3-2 deficit in last night’s game to score three runs in the seventh inning to earn a 5-3 victory in the first of three against the Mets. The loss drops the Mets 2.5 games behind the Miami Marlins in the race for the second Wild Card spot. Neil Walker gave the Mets an early lead with a two-run homerun and is 13-for-25 with three home runs in the last six games. Arizona has won three of its last four games and got a boost when Zack Greinke came off the disabled list on Tuesday and posted a quality start. Arizona CF A.J. Pollock (fractured elbow), who has been out all season, could play the field during his rehab assignment on Wednesday or Thursday.
Pitchers: Diamondbacks – Robbie Ray (5-11, 4.83 ERA) | Mets – Bartolo Colon (10-6, 3.46)
Robbie Ray has lost six of his last seven decisions and has been horrible in his last three. He is 0-3 with a 7.02 ERA in his last three turns with four homeruns allowed. Ray has been racking up the strikeout total with 30 in those last three games. Ray made his only previous appearance against New York last season and worked five scoreless innings on June 4th without factoring in the decision.
Bartolo Colon has been trading wins and losses in his last five starts and is coming off a win in his last turn. He limited the Yankees to one run over 6.2 innings to earn the win. Arizona is the only franchise Colon has not earned a win over in his career, going 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA in two starts.
The game last night went over with better pitchers on the mound. I don’t trust either one of these guys tonight. Ray has been horrible and the Mets might hit seven by themselves. I’ll take the over in this one.
