The Arizona Diamondbacks gathered some momentum prior to the All-Star Break and hope to continue their charge toward a wild card spot when the second half gets started in St. Louis against the Cardinals on Friday night. The Diamondbacks followed a three-game skid by winning their final three against Colorado last weekend to get back above .500 and to within 1.5 games of the Phillies for the second NL wild card spot. Arizona is 18-11 in the opener of a series and 10-3 when they come in after a win, while the Cardinals are just 13-16 in openers. St. Louis is not only a half-game behind the D’backs in the wild card hunt, but more importantly, are two games behind the Chicago Cubs for the National League Central lead. The Cards dropped their last two games of the first half to San Francisco that wrapped-up a 4-5 West Coast road trip. St. Louis first baseman Paul Goldschmidt will get his first taste of action against Arizona, the team he starred for from 2011 through 2018 before being traded to the Cardinals last offseason. Arizona, who is 6-4 in St. Louis over the past three seasons, will go with lefty Robbie Ray and the Cardinals’ veteran Adam Wainwright.

Ray is coming off a solid outing on Saturday in which he limited the Rockies to a run and two hits over six innings in Arizona’s 4-2 victory. Ray boasts 137 strikeouts in 104.2 innings, but has also walked 54 batters. He has a 6.10 ERA in five career starts against the Cardinals, but just 1.48 at Busch Stadium.

Wainwright lasted only five innings in his last start on July 3rd, allowing two runs and four hits including three walks in a no-decision against Seattle. His numbers are much better at home where he is 4-2 with a 2.68 ERA in eight starts. Wainwright is 8-5 with a 2.95 ERA in his career against the Diamondbacks.
Wainwright has had his ups and downs this season, but most of his ups have been at home where his ERA is almost four runs better than on the road, while Ray has been hit hard in three of his last four starts away from home. Cardinals take the opener of a key series.
