Arizona (39-32) at LA Angels (38-34)
When: Monday, June 18th 2018
Where: Angel Stadium, Anaheim, CA
Time: 10:05 ET | TV: ESPN
Opening Odds: Los Angeles -116/8
The Los Angeles Angels had been playing very well on the road this season, but hit a wall in their recently wrapped-up nine-game trek by dropping six of the last seven after taking the first two in Minnesota. The Halos return home for a brief two-game interleague battle with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. The Angels’ bullpen has let them down the last two nights against Oakland, surrendering a lead in Saturday’s 6-4 setback and faltering again the following day. Andrew Heaney pitched brilliantly over eight innings, but the relievers allowed two runs in the ninth to tie it before falling 6-5 in 11 innings. The Diamondbacks had to settle for a split of a four-game series against the New York Mets this weekend when closer Brad Boxberger surrendered four runs and four hits – two homers – in the ninth inning of a 5-3 setback on Sunday. The D’Backs still hold a 1.5-game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West, while the Angels have fallen 9.5 back of the Houston Astros in the AL West. The stars for each team are on incredible hot streaks right now, as Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt is 25-for-50 with six home runs over his last 12 games and the Angels’ Mike Trout is 13-for-19 with four homers over his last six.
Pitchers: Diamondbacks – Zack Greinke (5-5, 3.87 ERA) | Angels – Jaime Barria (5-2, 2.61)
Greinke will look for a bounce-back game after struggling against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, allowing five runs on as many hits and four walks in 4.2 innings. Greinke has not completed seven innings in his last six starts and could not make it through six in either of the last two. He is facing the Angels for the first time since September of 2015, when he earned the victory after allowing three runs in six innings.
Jaime Barria had a string of five straight starts without a loss come to an end when he ran into a hot Seattle Mariners team on Tuesday. Barria was charged with three runs – two earned – and eight hits in five innings. He shutout the Texas Rangers over six innings in his previous outing on June 1st before being sent back to the minors. Barria is making his third career interleague start after picking up a win at Colorado on May 9th and losing to San Francisco on April 22nd.
Both teams had rough weekends, but the Angels still managed to keep the offense going, while Arizona’s stalled out against the Mets. The D’Backs are not as good on the road this season, going 5-11 over their last 16 away from Phoenix. I’ve been impressed with Barria so far this season and he’s been even better at home. I’ll take the Angels tonight.
Pick: Angels +100
