Chicago Cubs (45-38) at Cincinnati (37-43)
When: Sunday, June 30th, 2019
Where: Great American Ballpark,
Cincinnati, Ohio
Time: 1:10 ET | TV: MLB Network
Opening Odds: Chicago -105/10

The Chicago Cubs haven’t played particularly well on the road this season, but put forth an all-around effort Saturday and go for a series win at the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday afternoon. Javier Baez broke open a 1-0 game in the eighth inning Saturday with his fifth career grand slam in Chicago’s 6-0 win in Cincinnati to improve to 16-22 away from home and keep their slim lead over Milwaukee in the National League Central. The Cubs received six shutout innings from Jose Quintana and will now turn to Jon Lester in the rubber match against Anthony DeSclafani. Jason Heyward homered for the second time in the series and has driven in seven runs during a four-game RBI streak for the Cubs, who won for just the second time in the past seven meetings with the Reds. Cincinnati fell for the fifth time in six games and got two hits from Joey Votto, who is 10-for-18 over his last five games. Second baseman Scooter Gennett, who made his season debut Friday after recovering from a groin injury sustained in spring training, is 1-for-8 in his first two games, as the Reds remained five games out of a wild card spot and 6.5 games behind Chicago in the division.

Pitchers: Cubs – Jon Lester (7-5, 3.83 ERA) | Reds – Anthony DeSclafani (4-4, 4.70)

Lester hopes to continue his June resurgence by closing out the month with his fifth win against just one loss. He’s coming off a solid outing against Atlanta in which he allowed two runs (zero earned) and five hits while striking out seven over six innings on Monday. He has allowed seven home runs in his last four starts, but kept the ball in the yard Monday. Lester, who is 7-1 with and 3.88 ERA in 16 starts against Cincinnati, has a 5.82 ERA in six road starts this season.

DeSclafani’s three-start unbeaten streak came to a screeching halt last time out when he was tagged for six runs and eight hits over 4.1 innings in the 7-5 loss at Milwaukee. He had allowed one run in each of his previous three starts and did not surrender a home run in that stretch. DeSclafani received a no-decision earlier this season against the Cubs when he gave up four runs – three homers – in 3.2 innings of a 6-5 Cincinnati win.

Lester has not been good on the road this year, but always seems to pitch his best against the Reds. The Cubs are 14-2 in his 16 starts against Cincinnati and if Quintana can shut down the Reds, so can Lester. Look for the Cubs to earn the series win on Sunday afternoon.
