The Chicago Cubs offense was slowed down on Saturday by Stephen Strasburg after exploding for 14 runs off Max Scherzer and several relievers in Friday’s series opener against the Washington Nationals. The Cubs are in danger of losing their second straight series when they play the rubber match on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball in the Nation’s Capital. Washington gave up six home runs to Chicago on Friday night before bouncing back with a 5-2 win on Saturday behind Juan Soto’s pair of hits and three RBIs after he recorded two hits and scoring a run in Friday’s loss. Kris Bryant, who hit three homers on Friday, was among a top four in the Cubs’ lineup Saturday that went a combined 1-for-14. The red-hot Kyle Hendricks will be on the mound for the Cubs against the struggling Jeremy Hellickson. Chicago remained 1.5 games ahead of Milwaukee in the NL Central, while Washington stayed seven back of Philadelphia in the NL East. The Cubs will be home Monday for the first of four with those first place Phillies.

Hendricks has pitched seven innings or more, while allowing one earned run or less in four of his last five starts with the outlier being a clunker at Arizona on April 26th. He is coming off a couple of strong eight-inning performances in which he allowed one earned run over that stretch and before that, pitched a complete game shutout versus St. Louis. Hendricks is 2-2 with a 2.61 ERA in seven career starts against the Nationals.

Hellickson has been almost the opposite, mixing in a decent start at Philadelphia (two runs, nine Ks in 5.1 innings) with four starts that resulted in him allowing five runs or more. That Nationals have lost four of his last five starts and Hellickson has served-up at least one homer in each of those outings (seven total). Hellickson pitched 5.2-hitless innings versus the Cubs last season, but allowed two earned runs while walking four.
I can’t in my right mind go with Hellickson and that Nationals in this one. He’s been dreadful and Hendricks is pitching like an All-Star. Despite the setback on Saturday, the Cubs have been pretty hot and should be able to capture the rubber match of this weekend series.
