Chicago Cubs (31-24) at St Louis (28-28)
When: Saturday, June 1st, 2019
Where: Busch Stadium,
St Louis, Missouri
Time: 7:15 ET | TV: FOX
Opening Odds: St Louis -140/9
The St. Louis Cardinals won 10 of 11 games to end the month of April – and the first day of May – to claim the majors best record. It’s hard to believe, but they went the entire month of May without winning two games in a row – until last night – when they took down the first place Chicago Cubs 2-1 in 10 innings. The win moves St. Louis to within 3.5 games of the Cubs, and the Cardinals can claim their first winning series in nine tries with a win in the second game of their weekend series Saturday night as part of FOX’s Game of the Week package. The Cardinals managed just five hits Friday, but two of them came in the bottom of the 10th including Matt Carpenter’s walk-off single that platted Kolten Wong and sent most of the Busch Stadium crowd home happy. Wong came into the series 0-for-21 over his previous six games but collected two hits including a double in the 10th before Carpenter’s hit. The Cubs lead in the NL Central is down to a half-game over Milwaukee and they have lost six of their last eight contests after going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position Friday. Chicago had just six hits, but Anthony Rizzo recorded one of them to extend his hitting streak to 12 games (20-for-47, five homers, 13 RBI). Kris Bryant is 11-for-29 with two homers in his last eight games.
Pitchers: Cubs – Jose Quintana (4-4, 3.73 ERA) | Cardinals – Jack Flaherty (4-3, 3.77)
Jose Quintana is winless in his last four outings despite two quality starts in that stretch including six scoreless innings versus Philadelphia on May 21st. His latest start was his worst since early April, allowing six runs (five earned) and 12 hits across 5.1 innings last Sunday in a 10-2 loss against Cincinnati. Quintana last won a game on May 5th against St. Louis when he allowed two runs over six innings, but owns a 5.11 ERA in five road appearances.

Jack Flaherty is going the other way with three straight quality starts, including a no-decision last Sunday against Atlanta when he threw six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Flaherty has three or fewer earned runs in six straight outings including a May 3rd outing versus the Cubs in which he surrendered three runs over 5.2 innings.
Neither team is playing particularly well, but I still like the Cubs better in this matchup. I mentioned Quintana’s road ERA at 5.11, but two of those outings he allowed zero earned runs and two of them he allowed three. The reason the ERA is high is because he got bombed in Milwaukee in early April. He was good against the Cardinals a month ago and the St. Louis lineup doesn’t scare me right now. I’ll take Chicago in this one.
