The Texas Arlington Mavericks and Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners will be looking to make history for their respective programs when they meet Wednesday night in the NIT quarterfinals. The Mavericks improved to 3-5 in postseason games and 2-2 all-time in the NIT with Monday’s 85-69 home triumph of Akron, setting a school record with 27 wins and moving to 14-0 at home this season. Junior Kaelon Wilson, who scored 20 points in place of the injured Jalen Jones (12 points per game) in Arlington’s 105-89 first-round win against BYU, scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting versus Akron. Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, Kevin Hervey, added 13 points and seven rebounds against the Zips and Erick Neal contributed 13 points and nine assists, giving him 232 for the season – a program record. Hervey (17.1 points, 8.5 rebounds per game, 68 3-pointers) has scored in double figures in 28 straight games. The diminutive Neal chips in 10.3 points per game to go along with 6.6 assists, and he leads the team with 58 steals while ranking third with 64 three-pointers made.

Bakersfield raced out to a 44-19 halftime lead and beat California 73-66 in the first round for its first-ever postseason victory and followed that by blowing out Colorado State on Monday 81-63 on the road. All-WAC first teamer Jaylin Airington scored 19 points and the Roadrunners defense held the Rams to 35% shooting while forcing 17 turnovers in the victory. Airington, a senior, leads the team in scoring at 14.5 points per game and adds 4.7 rebounds, while sophomore guard Damiyne Durham contributes 12.6 points and has hit 91 3-pointers at a 34% rate. Matt Smith, a 6-6 senior forward, anchors the paint – averaging 10.2 points on 52.5% shooting and a team-high 5.8 rebounds. Seldom-used junior Moataz Aly could be a factor on the inside as he averages nearly two blocks a game in just 12 minutes per. The winner will travel to New York City to play either Georgia Tech or Ole Miss next Tuesday.

Arlington has been terrific at home, winning 17 straight dating back to last season, but the Roadrunners have been a monster away from home at covering the spread. They’ve covered their last eight games as a road dog and are 10-6 straight up this season away from home. I like the points in this one.
