Week 1 of the NFL Preseason schedule wraps up at Sofi Stadium Sunday afternoon, as the Los Angeles Rams host the Dallas Cowboys. Two years removed from a Super Bowl title, the Rams stumbled out of the gate in 2023, but won seven of their final eight games to claim a wild card berth. Dallas went into 2023 with high expectations and won the NFC East with a 12-5 record. However, they made yet another early playoff exit with a 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Wild Card Weekend.

Neither one of these teams really care about the preseason based on their recent history. Dallas has won three of their last four preseason games, but have dropped 17-of-19 on the road and have failed to score 10 points in nine of those outings. The Rams have beaten Dallas three of the last four times in August, but they have lost five in a row overall, averaging a measly 11.6 points a game. Dallas comes into this contest as a 4-point favorite with a total pegged at 35.

DALLAS COWBOYS

Few starters are expected to see much action this Sunday, so Trey Lance will get his chance to make the roster as a backup QB. Selected third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lance never got going due to his ineffectiveness and injuries and has had a rough training camp thus far. He will battle Cooper Rush for the backup role. With star CeeDee Lamb not at camp as he seeks a new contract, both Lance and Rush will look for Jalon Tolbert, who has impressed Dak Prescott with his performance so far at camp. The Cowboys will travel to Las Vegas for their Week 2 game against the Raiders.

LOS ANGELES RAMS

Head coach Sean McVay has historically rested starters during the entire preseason, and will probably do so again this August. We will see the debut of rookie quarterback Stetson Bennett, who was selected in the fourth round at the 2023 NFL Draft after leading the Georgia Bulldogs to consecutive national championships. Bennett elected to sit out last season for personal reasons. He will battle veteran Jimmy Garoppolo for the backup job behind Matt Stafford.

Both of these teams don’t care much about winning preseason games, so I expect a pretty low scoring affair. Dallas has been awful on the road during the month of August so give me the points with the home team here.
