The first of two important meetings between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles takes place this Sunday night at Lincoln Financial Field. The NFC East owns the most wins of any division in the league with the Eagles leading the way as the lone unbeaten (5-0). The Cowboys and surprising New York Giants are right behind at 4-1. Dallas will be starting quarterback Cooper Rush once again, as he fills in for the injured Dak Prescott. Rush came in for Prescott in the Week 1 loss at Tampa Bay, but has won each of his four starts including last week’s 22-10 win at the Los Angeles Rams.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday that Prescott will begin throwing at practice Wednesday, and he would need a full week of practice before being cleared. Rush hasn’t been spectacular, but he’s not turning the ball over and the Cowboys are running the ball more effectively. Rush has passed for 839 yards with four touchdowns and zero picks. The duo of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard are leading the rushing attack and combined for 164 yards against the Rams last week. The defense behind linebacker Micah Parsons hasn’t allowed more than 19 points yet and just 20 combined in the past two games. Their 20 sacks – 6.0 by Parsons – are the fourth most by any team through five games since the 1970 AFL/NFL merger. Dallas will host Detroit next Sunday afternoon.
Philadelphia was a little fortunate last week against Arizona, who missed a 43-yard field goal with about 20 seconds left. Hurts hasn’t thrown a touchdown in the last two games, but had two more rushing scores last week and now has six on the season. The Eagles have some offensive line concerns entering Week 6 as Jordan Mailata (right shoulder), center Jason Kelce (left ankle), and guards Landon Dickerson (leg) and Isaac Seumalo (ankle) are all banged up. As a team, the Eagles are still run-heavy, but wideouts DeVonta Smith and AJ Brown are capable of catching deep passes. Philadelphia’s defense is also top 10 both against the pass and run. The Eagles are 4-1-1 against the spread in their last six home games.
The talk is always about the quarterbacks, but these defenses are very good, especially Dallas’. The Cowboys should be able to slow the Eagles’ offense and control the clock in what I expect to be a low-scoring game. I’ll take the points.
Pick: Cowboys +6
