The Los Angeles Clippers have been the talk of the NBA with their duo of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, but the MVP of this league right now might be Dallas’ Luka Doncic. He was the 2018-19 NBA Rookie of the Year and has raised his game already early this season. Last week at age 20 years and 263 days, Doncic had a 42-point, 12-assist, 11-rebound triple-double in a win over the San Antonio Spurs, making him the second-youngest player in league history with a 40-point triple-double (LeBron James) and already has seven of them this season. The Mavericks have won five in a row while score 137 points or more in each of the last three including a 137-123 win at Houston on Sunday to overtake the Rockets in the Southwest Division. The Clippers have also won five straight after completing a 5-0 homestand with a 134-109 triumph over New Orleans on Sunday. Last year, the Clippers and Mavericks split four meetings with the home team winning each one. Doncic played in three of them and averaged 25.7 points, 7.0 assists and 7.0 rebounds. The Clippers have failed to cover their previous four trips to Dallas.
Los Angeles won their fifth in a row Sunday despite stars Leonard (26 points) and George (18) shooting a combined 13-of-39 from the field against New Orleans. The Clippers have the NBA’s best bench by far as Montrezl Harrell (34 points, 12 rebounds) and Lou Williams (19 points) had huge games. Williams ranks first in the NBA in scoring off the bench and Harrell fourth. The Clippers have yet to lose this season when both George and Leonard play and are outscoring teams by more than 18 points per game during the winning streak. L.A. remains without young sharpshooter Landry Shamet due to a high ankle strain and are 0-4 ATS in their past four road games. The Clippers will be in Memphis to take on the Grizzlies tomorrow night.
Tim Hardaway Jr. added a season-high 31 points in the win over Houston Sunday, while Kristaps Porzingis recorded 23 points and 13 rebounds. Porzingis has double-doubles in five of the past six games and Dallas has scored at least 70 first-half points in two of the past three games. The Mavs are tied for second in the league in scoring at 119.1 points per game and have covered their past four at home. Doncic has at least 30 points and 10 assists in four straight games, has scored 30 or more points nine times this season. The Mavericks will get a couple of days off before embarking on a three-game road trip beginning Friday at Phoenix.
Both teams are on a roll right now, but I like the home squad in this one based on recent trends. The Mavs have won and covered the last four meetings with the Clippers in Dallas and L.A. is 0-4 ATS in their last four games away from home. The Mavericks are also 8-3 ATS on one day of rest.
