The surging Clemson Tigers travel to Tallahassee to take on the slumping Florida State Seminoles in a key ACC matchup on Wednesday night. The Tigers are ranked 12th in the country after reeling off four straight victories, while the Seminoles have dropped two-straight and three of the last four. Clemson is one win shy of tying the program record for conference victories at 10 and are coming off a 72-48 rout of Pittsburgh on Thursday that clinched their third 20-win season under coach Brad Brownell. The Seminoles lost 84-69 at Notre Dame on Saturday, three days after giving No. 1 Virginia all they could handle in a 59-55 setback. Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton is seeking his 500th career win and 300th with the Seminoles. The ‘Noles have won three straight meetings with Clemson, but they’ll need to get off to a good start, because the Tigers are 18-0 this season when tied or leading at halftime. ESPN’s Bracketology currently have Clemson as a three-seed and Florida State a nine.

The Tigers lost power forward Donte Grantham to a season-ending knee injury in a win over Notre Dame on January 20th, and promptly went out the next time and scored just 36 points in a loss at Virginia. Since then, the Tigers have adjusted without their second-leading scorer and are relying on their backcourt for scoring. Guards Marcquise Reed (15.4 points, 4.7 rebounds), Gabe DeVoe (13.5, 4.6), and Shelton Mitchell (12, 3.9 assists) all are capable of having big nights. DeVoe recorded seven 3-pointers in a 25-point performance against Pittsburgh, and the Tigers have made 10 or more from beyond the arc in four straight games for the first time since 1983.

The Seminoles should have an easier time inside now that Grantham is out of the picture. They too rely on the backcourt with the duo of Terance Mann (14.5 points, 5.9 rebounds) and Braian Angola (13.4 points) to carry the load on offense, and both guards are rather tall at 6’6″. Power forward Phil Cofer (13.2 points, 5.4 rebounds) is the only other double-digit scorer for Florida State, while 7’4″ center Christ Koumadje averages 8.6 points and boasts 27 blocked shots in 14 games. Guard C.J. Walker is 12-for-17 from the field and averaging 11 points over his last three games.
I’m not sure why Florida State is favored in this one, but it must have to do with Grantham being out for Clemson and this game being in Tallahassee. This is a strong Clemson team that has some momentum here, while Florida State is slipping a bit.
