The Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards are both playing well and making their move back up the Eastern Conference standings and will meet for just the second time this season on Thursday night in D.C. Oddly enough, the Wizards won five straight games after losing All-Star John Wall to a knee injury before falling flat in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Bradley Beal scored 30 points in the 115-102 loss to the 76ers and is averaging 23.4 points on 50% shooting and 6.2 assists over his last five games. The Celtics are also coming off a loss after reeling off four consecutive victories, falling 111-91 at Toronto on Tuesday to see their lead in the Eastern Conference shrink to one game over the Raptors. Kyrie Irving returned from a quad injury to score 17 points in 22 minutes for Boston, but saw his team’s chances fade early during a 37-point first half. Beal’s 25 points led the Wizards in a 111-103 win at Boston on Christmas. The home team has won nine of the last 10 meetings including all seven games of last year’s playoff series in which Boston won.

Irving and rookie Jaylen Brown combined to shoot 10-of-17 from the floor while the team’s three other starters – Al Horford, Jayson Tatum and Aron Baynes – had a combined 12 points on 6-of-22 shooting against Toronto. Horford was 1-for-5 from the floor against the Raptors and shoots 46.2% on the road, compared to 55.1% at home. Terry Rozier scored 18 points off the bench and is averaging 19.3 over the last four games. Boston has the 25th-ranked scoring offense in the league (103.0), but are second in points allowed (98.7), and first in defensive field goal percentage (43.2). The Celtics return home for the next three games starting with Indiana tomorrow night.

Washington averaged 32.2 assists during the five-game winning streak without Wall, before recording 23 against Philadelphia. Beal was one of five players to score in double-figures against Toronto, including two off the bench – Ian Mahinmi (13) and Kelly Oubre, Jr. (10). Mahinmi, who averages 4.3 points a game, has scored double-digits in three of the last four games and has hit 12 of his 15 shots during that span and 14-of-16 free throws. Oubre Jr. is 1-for-14 from beyond the arc over his last three games. The Wizards, who lead Miami by 2.5 games in the Southeast Division, will be on the road for the next three games starting with Chicago on Saturday.
Washington’s win at Boston on Christmas broke a long string of home victories in this series, but that trend will get back on track Thursday. The Celtics are just 1-4 ATS in their last five trips to the Nation’s Capital.
