The Boston Celtics will seek to come out even as they end their four-game road trip while the Denver Nuggets look to stay hot at home before heading back out on the road. The East-leading Celtics are still clinging on to that top spot despite losing five of their last six games including Saturday night’s setback at Golden State. Boston led most of the night at the defending champion Warriors before falling just short in a 109-105 loss. The Celtics are currently 1-2 on the trip and will face another tough crowd Monday in Denver, where the Nuggets are 19-6 and looking to finish a five-game homestand with a fourth win. Boston’s Kyrie Irving, who had a tough task guarding Steph Curry on Saturday, will be in for another challenge with Jamal Murray, who is averaging 25.3 points on the Nuggets’ homestand. Denver is sitting right on the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot, but are just 4.5 games behind Minnesota in the competitive Northwest Division. Irving scored 33 points in Boston’s 124-118 home win over Denver on December 13th.

Irving held his own against the Warriors just fine on Saturday, scoring 37 points on 13-of-18 shooting while going 5-of-6 from 3-point range. The former Cavalier is averaging 32.5 points on 58% shooting over the last four games, including nailing half his shots from beyond the arc. Backup point guard Terry Rozier contributed nine points, five rebound, and three assists against Golden State in 24 minutes before spraining his right ankle and is questionable for Monday. Power forward Al Horford has recorded back-to-back double-doubles with a combined 28 points and 25 boards in the losses to the Lakers and Warriors. Boston will return home to face the New York Knicks on Wednesday.

Denver followed up a 130-118 win over the Knicks with a 91-89 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday, as the showed they can compete in a fast-paced and grind-it-out game. The Nuggets’ offense was spear-headed by center Nikola Jokic on Saturday, who recorded 16 rebounds, 11 assists and earned the triple-double when his go-ahead jumper down the stretch gave him 11 points. Shooting guard Gary Harris led the team with 24 points on Saturday and is averaging 23.5 over his last two while draining 7-of-13 three-pointers. The homestand might be over, but the Nuggets head out for a road game in San Antonio before returning to the Pepsi Center for the next three including Oklahoma City and Golden State.
NBA SCORES – ODDS – PUBLIC PLAYS
I don’t trust Boston right now even though they proved me wrong with a nice cover on Saturday. The Nuggets are sneaky-good and even better at home. I was a little surprised they were favored in this one, but I’m still going to take them.
