The Boston Celtics will look to even-up their best-of-seven first round series when they visit the Chicago Bulls for Game 4 on Sunday night at United Center. The home team has failed to win a game thus far after the Bulls took the first two in the series, while Boston took Game 3 on Friday. Boston cruised to a 104-87 victory in Game 3 with Chicago played without point guard Rajon Rondo, who is out indefinitely with a fractured right thumb. All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas played admirably through two losses in the wake of his sister’s death in a car accident prior to the series. He scored 16 points in Game 3 – nearly 13 below his season average – but handed out nine assists as others around him became more involved offensively, namely fellow guard Avery Bradley (15 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists). Backup point guard Terry Rozier was a non-factor in Games 1 and 2, but woke up in Game 3 to provide 11 points in 23 minutes off the bench. Power forward Bobby Portis scored a total of five points over the last two games after recording 19 in Game 1. Boston made 17-of-37 threes while holding Chicago to 6-of-21.

Rondo’s absence was felt in the Game 3 loss, as Chicago saw their assist total fall from 28 in Game 2 to 14 in Game 3, while their turnovers jumped from 12 to 18. Star Jimmy Butler averaged 26 points in the two wins at Boston before being held to 14 on 7-of-21 shooting in Friday’s loss and a -27 rating. Center Robin Lopez has been a monster around the rim when Chicago has the ball, collecting 16 offensive rebounds in the series, which has helped him average 14.7 points on 70.4% shooting. As a team, Chicago has outrebounded the Celtics by an average of 12.3 in the series. Point guard Jerian Grant stepped in for Rondo, but failed to record an assist and committed four turnovers in his 15+ minutes of action. Veteran Dwayne Wade was one of three players to lead the team with three assists, but shot just 6-of-18 from the floor and will need to step up his game. One good sign for Chicago is Game 3 was that they made all 15 of their free throws.

Thomas should be more focused the rest of the series for Boston and take advantage of Rondo absence. Chicago is still dominating the boards, which will keep them in it, but I think Boston pulls this one out and gets back in the series.
Pick: Celtics -2.5
