The San Antonio Spurs continue their four-game homestand with two more against the top teams in each conference beginning with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night (TNT television). The Spurs, who have won four straight, are 2.5 games behind Golden State for the top spot in the Western Conference and will host the Warriors on Wednesday night. San Antonio nearly blew a 20-point lead on Saturday night before holding off the New York Knicks 106-98 for their 28th home victory. Kawhi Leonard scored 29 against New York and had 41 points as the Spurs survived an overtime affair at Cleveland earlier in the season. Leonard has scored in double figures in 99 straight games and can become the third Spur to reach 100, joining George Gervin (406) and David Robinson (157). Pau Gasol, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds versus the Knicks, missed the January 21st contest at Cleveland due to an injured finger. The Spurs second-ranked defense allowed Cleveland to shoot 49.5% in that game including 13 made three-pointers. The Spurs next five games will be against teams with winning records.

The Cavaliers defense is beginning to be a problem and Saturday’s 127-115 home loss to Washington was no exception. The Wizards shot a scorching 59.8% from the field for the game as the Cavs surrendered 40 points in the first quarter. Cleveland has allowed 120+ points in three of their last four games and head coach Tyronn Lue was asked whether or not there was time to repair the defense. “I’m not confident,” he said. Cleveland has dropped three of their last five and have seen their lead in the Eastern Conference dip to just a half a game over the Boston Celtics. LeBron James was able to play Saturday despite a scratched cornea, ditching protective goggles early in the game and finishing with 24 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. He is averaging 27 points while shooting 58 percent in four games since resting in a road game against the Los Angeles Clippers, while teammate Kyrie Irving has scored at least 20 points in a career-high 22 straight games. Center Tristan Thompson is a sizzling 17-for-20 from the field over his last five games.

Cleveland can’t stop anyone right now, and until they do, I have to go against them. The Spurs are on a roll right now and seem to get better as the season goes on. I’ll lay the points.
